Swift quarterback Boykin triggered rout by Imhotep

Nasir Boykin set the tone with his legs on Imhotep Charter's first offensive series against Malvern Prep. The swift quarterback bolted 27 yards to the Malvern 36 on the second play. Three plays later, he dashed 19 yards to set up Chris Wells' 1-yard touchdown dive.

Boykin and the visiting Panthers added a pair of first-half scores en route to an impressive 48-7 nonleague triumph Friday night at the Pellegrini Athletic Complex.

Boykin rolled left and found high-leaping receiver Aamir Brown for a 5-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Later, his 44-yard throw to Brown (the dynamic senior split two defenders to make the grab) paved the way for Brown's 5-yard wildcat tally.

Boykin and Brown connected again for a 15-yard, third-quarter TD that made it 36-7. Boykin began the series with a 30-yard jaunt.

Overall, Boykin completed 9 of 15 passes for 157 yards. The 6-foot, 187-pound senior rushed 11 times for 86 yards.

"He had a presence about him in this game," Imhotep coach Mark Schmidt said.

Through five games, the southpaw has converted 33 of 47 throws for 571 yards and 11 TDs. He has carried 22 times for 186 yards and a score.

"Coach Schmidt wants us to be as balanced as possible on offense, so I get to run the ball a decent amount," Boykin said. "I like being able to show that I'm a dual-threat quarterback."

Boykin mostly spreads his passes among Brown, Justin Harris, Jeffrey Davis, and Dedrick Parson.

"If you put the ball anywhere in their vicinity, they'll come down with it," Boykin said. "I have confidence in all of them."

The Panthers, who came in ranked No. 2 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by the Inquirer, netted 331 rushing yards on 38 attempts against the No. 4 Friars.

Solid grunt work was turned in by center Brashon McCrae, guards Arick Lochetto and Zahir Schenk, tackles Justin Johnson and Qadir Ahmed, and tight end Khayr Ransom.

The 6-6, 330-pound Johnson, a junior, has scholarship offers from Brigham Young, Maryland Missouri, Pittsburgh, and Vanderbilt, among others.

Keyed by 6-3, 345-pound nose guard Jalen Denby, Imhotep (5-0) limited Malvern (3-2) to 101 yards rushing on 26 tries. Friars junior quarterback Kevin Doyle hit on 8 of 22 passes for 53 yards.

Boykin, who played youth football for the Fox-Rok Ravens, has drawn varying degrees of recruiting interest from Kent State, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Rutgers, Stony Brook, and Villanova.

"The people I trust have told me to be patient and let the process play out, so that's what I'm going to do," the 18-year-old said.

Rescheduled. In a game postponed Saturday because of a possible muddy field at George Washington, Archbishop Wood (1-2-1, 1-1 Catholic League Red Division) will visit Archbishop Ryan (3-2, 0-2) at 3 p.m. Sunday at Northeast.

Unfortunately for Ryan, it will be without quarterback Matt Romano. The hard-nosed senior, also a defensive back and punter, suffered a season-ending knee injury last weekend in a 48-6 loss to La Salle.

Extra points. In addition to Johnson, three other Imhotep players picked up offers last week from BYU: Brown, senior cornerback Mike Crawford, and sophomore defensive end Omar Speights. . . . Two of Malvern's highlights against Imhotep, both in the second quarter, were Danny Sullivan's interception and Zac Fernandez's 45-yard TD run. Friars halfback O'Shaan Allison (10 carries for 29 yards) left with an ankle injury in the second quarter and did not return. . . . Pennridge QB Jagger Hartshorn has carried 92 times for 838 yards and nine scores. . . . Penn Wood has made freshman Desman Johnson its starting quarterback, moving senior Javon Lindsey-Terrell to wide receiver. Johnson fired a 21-yard TD pass to Rahiem Bowens in a 24-6 home win Friday over Del-Val League rival Glen Mills.
