Roman Catholic High School hired Matt Griffin as its new head basketball coach on Wednesday.

An assistant coach under Speedy Morris at St. Joseph's Prep the last two seasons, Griffin is a graduate of St. Joseph's Prep who played basketball at both Rider University and Boston University. A captain for both college teams, he helped Boston qualify for the NCAA tournament in 2011 by winning the America East Championship.

Griffin, the son of former St. Joseph's University head coach John Griffin Sr., replaces former Roman coach Chris McNesby, who resigned in May after two straight state-championship seasons to spend more time with his family.

"I am looking forward to continuing to build upon what all of the past coaches have achieved for this historic program and institution," Griffin said in a statement.
