Boyertown wins Pa. 4A state baseball title

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Pat Hohlfeld tossed a six-hitter and walked only one as Boyertown topped District 7's Plum, 4-1, and captured the PIAA Class 4A baseball championship Thursday at Penn State's Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Pat Hohlfeld tossed a six-hitter and walked only one as Boyertown topped District 7's Plum, 4-1, and captured the PIAA Class 4A baseball championship Thursday at Penn State's Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Bears seized a 2-0 lead in the first inning on first baseman Ben Longacre's RBI single and designated hitter Mitchell Peers' RBI triple.

Ahead by 2-1, Boyertown, which won the Pioneer Athletic Conference title and placed fourth in the District 1 playoffs, added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Second baseman and leadoff man Mitchell Pinder went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs and an RBI.

The Bears (24-6) won their first state title since 1991 and third overall.
