Haverford School tops Malvern Prep in lacrosse

When the Haverford School lacrosse season began without 22 seniors from last year's undefeated squad, coach John Nostrant knew Keyveat Postell would be an important piece to the Fords' puzzle.

Friday afternoon against Inter-Ac rival Malvern Prep, Postell was just that, netting five goals as the Fords jumped ahead early and held on late for a 16-12 triumph over the visiting Friars.

"We've been looking forward to this game for a while," said Postell, a senior and Haverford School lifer. "This was essentially the Inter-Ac championship, because we are two powerhouse teams. This game was just really important for everybody."

Postell, who is also the student body president, scored two of the Fords' first six goals, which yielded a 6-0 advantage to end the first quarter.

Dox Aitken, also a senior, finished with four goals. Junior attacker John Nostrant, son of the coach, tallied three goals.

With Aitken and fellow senior Forry Smith attracting most of the defense's attention, Postell and Nostrant were two players the Fords (14-4, 5-1) have needed all season.

"They've really both been working hard," coach Nostrant said. "They're starting to play with a lot more confidence, shooting the ball well and riding it back. They've been doing a lot of things."

Senior goaltender Alex Demarco was stout in goal, stopping nine shots and forcing a few others wide.

Malvern (11-5, 4-2), which suffered its second defeat this season to the Fords, was led by two goals each by Adam Goldner, Kyle Anderson, Mike Fay and A.J. Traynor. Sam Stroud stopped 10 shots in goal. The Fords and Friars could meet again in postseason Inter-Ac play.

Postell, who will play at Penn next season and has been at Haverford School since kindergarten, led the Fords with four goals at halftime.

That production is a far cry from the struggles he faced at the end of his junior season. Postell, however, credited Smith and Aitken with helping him rebound.

"Guys like Dox and Forry giving us advice, telling us it's our turn to step up," he said. "Dox and Forry are great players, and they attract a lot of attention, so it was up to the guys who weren't playing much last year to step up now and keep the team as good as it was last year."
