La Salle swimmer Jake Sannem's best time of four minutes, 19.64 seconds in the boys' 500-yard freestyle led the Explorers to an outright team victory at the PIAA 3A Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University on Thursday.
Sannem's time broke the PIAA record previously set by St. Joseph's Prep swimmer Matt Belecanech in 2009.
Teammate Joseph Vizza clocked in at 4:27.05 to claim second place.
With the win, La Salle secured its fifth consecutive state championship.
The Explorers dedicated their season and state championship performance to late head coach Frank Lichtner. Lichtner lost his battle with cancer in October 2015.
In other action from the state championship:
Upper Dublin's Michael Jensen capitalized on his momentum from Wednesday and won the 100-yard freestyle race (42.69). Jensen set a record in the 200 freestyle on Wednesday.
Greg Brocato of La Salle took second place (44.46).
Jensen also led the Cardinals to a second-place team finish.
100 backstroke. James Wilson of Conestoga won the event (48.09). Teammate Brian McKenrick came in third, nearly two seconds behind (49.51).
Girls' SwimmingMarie Yacopino of North Penn scored 530.755 points to win the one-meter diving competition. Teammate Paige Burrell claimed second place with 471.70 points. Pennsbury's Nicole Costello (443.75) placed fifth and Quakertown's Taylor Bennett (431.35) placed sixth.
100 freestyle. Pennridge's Morgan Scott (49.65) came in second and Claire Walsh of Penncrest (51.11) placed fourth.
