Pa. boys: No. 1 Coatesville holds off Bensalem, 43-40

BOYS' BASKETBALL DISTRICT 1 CLASS AAAA FIRST ROUND Coatesville 43, Bensalem 40: Jordan Young hit a pair of free throws to seal the win as the top-seeded Red Raiders survived at home. Justus Martinez hit a bucket that gave Coatesville a 41-40 lead with 11.3 seconds left. He scored six of his 14 points in the fourth quarter. Bensalem, the 32nd seed, was led by Richard Dean and Ward Roberts, who each scored 11 points.

DISTRICT 1 CLASS AAAA FIRST ROUND

Coatesville 43, Bensalem 40: Jordan Young hit a pair of free throws to seal the win as the top-seeded Red Raiders survived at home. Justus Martinez hit a bucket that gave Coatesville a 41-40 lead with 11.3 seconds left. He scored six of his 14 points in the fourth quarter. Bensalem, the 32nd seed, was led by Richard Dean and Ward Roberts, who each scored 11 points.

Central Bucks West 54, Downingtown East 35: Cal Reichwein knocked down four threes to lead the host Bucks. He finished with 12 points, four assists, and three steals. Bill Power added four rebounds and three assists for the No. 7 seed. Eric Hohlenleitner grabbed six rebounds. Downingtown East, the 26th seed, was led by Jaret Cooper's 14 points.

Lower Merion 68, Penn Wood 66: Dion Harris scored 17 points and K.J. Helton added 12 as the 11th-seeded Aces won in overtime. Penn Wood, the 22nd seed, was led by Javon Lindsey-Terrell's 19 points.

Plymouth Whitemarsh 49, Radnor 36: Mike Lotito's 12 points and five rebounds led the way at home for the second-seeded Colonials. Xzavier Malone added 14 points and four rebounds. Oakley Spencer dished out five assists. Radnor, the 31st seed, was led by Mason Ressler's 10 points.

Ridley 51, North Penn 49: Bryan Bollinger hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to lift the fourth-seeded Green Raiders at home. Brett Foster scored eight of his 17 points in the second quarter. Julian Wing scored six of his 17 in the fourth quarter. He tied the game with 20 seconds left on a steal and a layup. Ricky Jones scored 15 points for 29th-seeded North Penn.

Central Bucks East 41, Pennsbury 30: Tommy Strasburger scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds to help the 17th-seeded Patriots pull off the road win. Central Bucks East, the 17th seed, was aided by Matt Pattyson's eight points and eight rebounds. Blake Peterson took a charge late in the fourth quarter to spark a run. The Patriots show 7 for 11 from the foul line down the stretch. Pennsbury, the No. 16 seed, was led by Tommy Strasburger's 13 points.

Chester 53, Council Rock North 27: The ninth-seeded Clippers rolled at home behind Maurice Henry's 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jamar Sudan chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds. Riley Thompson scored 13 points to lead Council Rock North, the No. 24 seed.

Pennridge 67, Central Bucks South 60: Dan Long knocked down four three-pointers to lead the fifth-seeded Rams at home. Long finished with 24 points. Ryan Cuthbert and Max Wagner each scored 13. Central Bucks South, 28th seed, was led by Ryan Joerger's five three-pointers and 20 points.

Spring-Ford 69, Penncrest 60: Nigel Cooke's 19 points helped the 12th-seeded Rams win at home. Charles Drummond and Cameron Reid each scored 14 points. Tyler Norwood led 21st-seeded Penncrest with 24 points.

Phoenixville 67, Boyertown 59: Christian Kelly scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the way for the No. 10 Phantoms at home. Jeff Conboy added 10 points. Ben Longacre scored 20 points to lead Boyertown, the 23rd seed. Longacre shot 10 for 11 from the foul line.

Downingtown West 69, Garnet Valley 52: Dom Guerrera scored 25 points to power the third-seeded Whippets at home. Ryan Betley and Josh Warren each added 17 points. Austin Laughlin and Brandon Starr each scored 14 points for the 30th-seeded Jaguars.

Conestoga 57, Great Valley 45: Daryl Caldwell scored 23 points and Charlie Martin added 15 points to lead the 14th-seeded Pioneers at home. Will Buzan's game-high 24 points led the No. 19 Patriots.

Hatboro-Horsham 68, Strath Haven 46: Clifton Moore knocked down five three-pointers as the 25th-seeded Hatters pulled the upset on the road. Moore finished with 28 points. Jay Davis chipped in with 22 points. Alex Ischiropoulos and Kyree Fuller each scored 10 points for No. 8 Strath Haven.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS

Roman Catholic 56, St. Joseph's Prep 39: Lamar Stevens scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Cahillites at Philadelphia University. Tony Carr added 14 points and eight rebounds. Nazeer Bostick finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Kyle Thompson led the Prep with 16 points. Roman will meet Archbishop Carroll in the semifinals on Wednesday night at the Palestra.

Neumann-Goretti 104, Bonner-Prendergast 65: Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and swatted eight shots as the host Saints rolled. Rasheed Browne added 10 points and seven assists. Quade Green scored 20 of his 22 points in the first half. He also knocked down four threes. Zane Martin had six three-pointers and 26 points. John Hargraves had 20 points for Bonner-Prendie. Neumann-Goretti will meet Archbishop Ryan on Wednesday at the Palestra in the semifinals.

QUAKER CUP FINAL

George School 51, Abington Friends 48: Austin Murphy scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as the visiting Cougars clinched the title. Luke Haug added 12 points and Adam Dixon had 10 points. Jordan Baker finished with 15 points for Abington Friends.

Boys' Swimming

CATHOLIC LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Joseph Vizza placed first in the 200-yard freestyle and was on La Salle's winning 200-yard freestyle as the Explorers built a large lead in the first day of the two-day event at La Salle University. La Salle's Jake Sannem won the 200-yard individual medley and Greg Brocato won the 50-yard freestyle. Both joined Vizza on the relay team. The Explorers head into Saturday with a 467-305 lead over St. Joseph's Prep.

DISTRICT 12 AA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Bonner-Prendergast's Luke McDevitt and John Ellis each won an individual event along with helping the Friars win the 200-yard freestyle relay. McDevitt won the 200-yard freestyle and Ellis won the 200-yard individual medley.
