Perkiomen Valley girls take Pioneer title

The basketball is "like a magnet," Perkiomen Valley's K.T. Armstrong said. "It's attracted to her hands." It does not matter if it is during practice or a game for the Vikings. If a shot goes up, sophomore Megan Jonassen is bound to find the ball, grab it, and reel it in.

The basketball is "like a magnet," Perkiomen Valley's K.T. Armstrong said. "It's attracted to her hands."

It does not matter if it is during practice or a game for the Vikings. If a shot goes up, sophomore Megan Jonassen is bound to find the ball, grab it, and reel it in.

"I just go up and get it," the forward said. "I want to be the one that wants it more."

That sentiment was apparent Wednesday night as Jonassen's double-double helped power Perk Valley to the program's first- ever Pioneer Athletic Conference title by beating Boyertown, 45-25.

"I can't explain it," Armstrong said. "It feels so amazing. It's my senior year and I wouldn't want to have it be any other way."

Like their previous clashes this season - both seven-point contests - the championship game was tight as both teams took their time with each offensive possession. A 14-13 contest at halftime, it seemed as if the Bears (19-5) and the Vikings (22-2) were destined for another nail-biter.

But then Jonassen grabbed an offensive rebound which led to an Armstrong three-pointer.

"K.T. Armstrong," the crowd chanted. "K.T. Armstrong."

Two minutes later, they repeated the process.

"That was one of the differences with this game," Armstrong, a St. Joseph's recruit, said. "In the others [against Boyertown] we got a little uncomfortable - forcing up shots - but this game we were calm all four quarters."

At one point, Jonassen scored seven straight points for the Vikings, as she finished with 12 points and added 13 rebounds. Armstrong and Hanan Richmond also chipped in with 12 points apiece for Perkiomen Valley, while Abby Kapp had 11 for Boyertown.

"We knew we had to come out and shut them down and I feel like we did that," Jonassen said. "Our defense completely carried us through that game."

After the celebration at Spring-Ford, which included cutting down the net, Jonassen held the plaque. She walked around the gym with it firmly in her hands.

But just as she does with a basketball, Jonassen wouldn't let it stay there. She'd share with her teammates.
