Statewide Top Teams: Six Imhotep players highlight all-state team

Six players and the coach from Imhotep Charter, which went 15-0 en route to statewide glory, were selected to the Class AAA all-state team by Pennsylvania football writers.

Imhotep senior running back Mike Waters, who rushed for nearly 1,900 yards and scored 45 touchdowns, was voted player of the year. Panthers boss Albie Crosby, whose squad outscored foes by 702-104 this season, was named coach of the year.

The other Imhotep players, all seniors, earning all-state honors were Florida State-bound tight end Naseir Upshur, offensive linemen Yasir Durant and JohnCarlo Valentin, and defensive ends Andre Mintze and Shaka Toney. Toney is projected to be a linebacker at Penn State.

Three Archbishop Wood players were recognized: senior quarterback Anthony Russo, a Rutgers recruit who passed for more than 2,400 yards and 35 TDs; senior offensive lineman Kurt Stengel (Navy); and junior wideout Mark Webb.

Bishop Guilfoyle junior Evan Chadbourn, a multipurpose threat who rushed for 2,297 yards and scored 53 TDs, was voted Class A player of the year. No Philly-area players were picked at that level.
