Statewide Top Teams: Pa. wrestling: Wood's Haegele, host of local wrestlers advance at state tournament

Archbishop Wood's Chad Haegele, the 132-pound No. 2 seed from the Northeast Region, defeated Pennridge's Josh Stillings, the Southeast No. 2, 9-3, Thursday night in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA wrestling tournament at the Giant Center in Hershey.

In other first-round action:

106. Pennridge's Matt Parker, the No. 1 seed in the Southeast Region, defeated Northwest No. 4, Kolby Ho (Dubois), 10-2. Council Rock North's Aiden Burke, the Southeast's No. 2, edged out South Central second-seed Dalton Rohrbaugh of Spring Grove, 2-1. Jakob Campbell, the third seed from Boyertown, clipped Southwest No. 4 Logan Macri (Canon-McMillan), 2-0.

113. No. 1 Dustin Steffenino (Upper Perkiomen) is the lone Southeast wrestler left in the class after his 3-minute, 45-second pin over Hunter Zondory, the Northwest No. 3 from Jersey Shore.

120. Southeast No. 1 Derek Gulotta of Owen J. Roberts grinded out a 7-5 decision over Cumberland Valley's Wyatt Long, the South Central No. 4. Southeast No. 3 Matthew Marino of Garnet Valley advanced to the quarterfinals by disqualification.

126. Downingtown East's Wade Cummings (Southeast No. 1), cruised by Northwest No. 3 Hunter Hendricks of General McLane, 15-7. Southeast No. 2 Zack Trampe (Council Rock South) advanced with a 4-2 win over South Central No. 2 Owen Wherley of South Western.

 152. Council Rock South's Dylan Schwartz, the Southeast No. 1, beat Southwest No. 3 Ethan Smith (Greater Latrobe), 3-2. No. 2 James Meyer (Downingtown East) beat South Central No. 2 Ethan Stever (Exeter Township), 3-1, in overtime.

160. Alex Elliott, the second seed from Sun Valley, snuck by Tristen Skelly (South Central No. 3, Mechanicsburg), 3-2, was the only Southeastern wrestler in the weight class to reach the quarterfinals. Top-seeded Josh Shalinsky (Council Rock North) was eliminated by Southwest No. 4 Brendan Burnham (Pine-Richland), 8-2.

170. Southeast No. 1 Kyle Gentile of Pennridge made quick work of Northwest No. 3 Ethan Laird (General McLane), wrapping him up in 51 seconds.

182. Southeast No. 1 Evan Wilson (Central Bucks East) topped Northeast No. 4 Jayden Reyes (Dieruff), 14-4. A state final against Boyertown's Gregg Harvey is still in play. Harvey, the Southeast No. 2, beat Northeast No. 2 Jared Wehrmann (Wallenpaupack), 6-4.

195. Southeast No. 1 Xavier Ferrizzi (Owen J. Roberts) dispatched South Central No. 4 Steven McNeal (Central Dauphin), 3-1, in overtime.  

220. Southeast No. 1 Jordan Wood (Boyertown) pinned Northeast No. 4 Jake Vaxmonsky (Pittston Area) in 1:42.

285. Tommy Killoran, the Southeast No. 1, made it 5 for 5 for Boyertown with a 9-3 decision over Northwest No. 3 Jason Oakes (Titusville).
