Constitution shakes off slow start to reach Public final

Constitution defeated Audenried in the Public League semifinals Thursday night, but if the Generals' long faces afterward were any indication, you might have thought they lost.

Constitution defeated Audenried in the Public League semifinals Thursday night, but if the Generals' long faces afterward were any indication, you might have thought they lost.

That's because their 70-57 victory at Southern was marred by turnovers, missed free throws, and plenty of missed opportunities.

It's a recipe the Generals can't afford to repeat in the championship game Sunday against Imhotep at St. Joseph's University.

"I felt like we played terrible," Constitution coach Rob Moore said. "We're not a championship-caliber team like that. We can't win on Sunday missing 19 free throws and, God knows, how many layups and dunks we missed."

The Generals (19-7) committed 20 turnovers and shot 27 of 46 (59 percent) from the free-throw line.

Audenried (15-4) finished slightly better at 16 of 24 (67 percent). However, 24 turnovers and foul trouble dashed the Rockets' hopes of victory.

Instead, Constitution took advantage. And if the missed free throws and miscues marred the victory, the play of Chad Andrews-Fulton was a bright spot.

Or was it?

The 6-foot-7 senior scored 14 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and blocked 4 shots. His 8-for-12 performance (67 percent) from the line was an improvement from earlier struggles.

"I think I shot terrible today," Andrews-Fulton said, smiling. "I could have done a lot better. I have to make them all, that's my plan."

His solution?

"Just staying focused. You hear the crowd and all that. Sometimes I pay attention to that. With time I'll get better and just stay focused."

Also for the Generals, Kimar Williams scored a game-high 20 points and added three steals. Ahmad Gilbert contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists, five steals, and two blocks.

Nisheem Wright scored 19 points for Audenried.
