It seemed like a once-in-a-career moment for Germantown Academy girls' basketball coach Sherri Retif when it happened five years ago. And then lightning struck twice Wednesday.

The veteran coach earned her 600th win when visiting Germantown Academy topped Baldwin, 48-40, in an Inter-Ac League game. And in the process, Olivia Gorman scored her 1,000th point.

Nearly five years ago to the day, Retif reached 500 wins, and Maggie Lucas scored her 2,000th point.

Something seems right about her sharing the spotlight with one of her players.

"It's really exciting for me to share 600 with another player," Retif said. "It's just exciting for me, because it's about the kids anyway."

And it was particularly poignant that Retif shared the milestone with Gorman. Retif, a former Tulane star who came to Germantown Academy 17 years ago, has known Gorman since she entered the lower school. Retif taught her in middle school and has also coached her in softball. Gorman, a senior guard who scored 22, will play both sports at Wesleyan.

"She's the kind of kid you want to go to battle with, always shows up, a quiet warrior, all business," Retif said.

Retif, whose record is 600-165, began coaching at Ursuline Academy in New Orleans. She came north and won three Del-Val League titles at Sun Valley, and at one point, reeled off 14 consecutive Inter-Ac titles at Germantown Academy.

So, who is in line for the next milestone when win 700 rolls around?

"I never would have imagined this would have happened, so you never know," Retif said. "Milestones can be a distraction, but it's so much fun to pause and reflect how much you appreciate the girls."

Boys' Basketball

D'Andre Covert was only in the game for 16 seconds, but that's all Academy Park needed to stun visiting Chester, 51-48, in a Del-Val League contest. Covert sank a three-pointer at the buzzer. Jawan Collins scored 17 points.

Boys' Soccer

Archbishop Wood coach Joe Krantz retired after 36 seasons. Krantz won 427 games and two Catholic League championships, the last coming this past season, when the Vikings advanced to the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals.

La Salle hired Tom McCaffery as its head coach. McCaffery, a 2001 graduate of the school, has been on the coaching staff for the last 10 seasons, most recently as varsity assistant. McCaffery succeeds Bob Peffle, who stepped down after 28 seasons.

Boys' Swimming

Radnor coach Tom Robinson won his 300th dual meet as the Raiders triumphed at Penncrest, 97-80. Robinson, the coach since 1984, has a record of 300-72-2 and has won a state championship and 10 Central League titles. Wednesday, as the Raiders moved to 9-0, Eli Avart won the 100 butterfly in a pool-record time of 52:97.
