Avon Grove ousts Methacton in field hockey playoffs

Gould scored with 1 minute, 37 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the 23d-seeded Red Devils to a 1-0 victory at No. 10 Methacton.

Avon Grove's Emily Carroll and Methacton's Sammi Steele were putting up dueling 13-save shutouts before Gould's winner.

In other first round action: No. 7 Phoenixville survived an upset bid when Bailey Quinn scored her second goal on a stroke in overtime to lift the Phantoms past visiting No. 26 Quakertown, 5-4.

Adriana Pero scored the winner as visiting No. 18 Mount St. Joseph outlasted No. 15 Owen J. Roberts, 3-1, in strokes. The game was scoreless after regulation.

Girls' Soccer

Casey Brown scored an early goal and host No. 4 Little Flower held on for a 1-0 victory over No. 5 St. Hubert in a Catholic League quarterfinal.

In another quarterfinal, top-seeded Archbishop Ryan rolled over visiting No. 9 Cardinal O'Hara, 9-0, behind two goals apiece from Jules Blank and Kailea Schwartz.

No. 2 Archbishop Wood blanked visiting No. 7 Hallahan, 2-0, behind three saves from Devon Haviland.

Sarah Opdyke paired a goal with an assist as No. 3 Lansdale Catholic clipped visiting No. 6 Archbishop Carroll, 2-0.

Public League quarterfinals. Keila Santos made 14 saves in regulation and overtime, then stopped the final penalty-kick attempt as No. 4 Northeast defeated visiting No. 5 Science Leadership Academy. The game was tied, 2-2, after two overtimes.

Olivia Keyes had a goal and two assists in top-seeded Franklin Towne Charter's 7-0 win over visiting MaST Charter.

Kearra Yaffe did all the scoring for No. 2 Philadelphia Academy Charter in its 2-0 victory over visiting No. 7 Prep Charter.

Romie Azor dished out three assists to help host No. 3 Central top No. 6 Masterman, 6-1.

Cross-Country

Despite missing two of its top runners, Malvern Prep repeated as Inter-Ac boys' champion on the 3.1-mile course at Belmont Plateau.

Sam Ritz of Germantown Academy defended his title and finished first in 16 minutes flat. Malvern Prep's Billy McDevitt crossed second in 16:39.

In the girls' race, Episcopal Academy edged out Agnes Irwin, 54-56.

Germantown Academy's Abbie Goldstein finished first in 19:45. Alexis Malberg of Episcopal Academy crossed next in 20:07, edging out Watts Sanaiya of Agnes Irwin by fractions of a second.

Golf

Kevin Conners of Bishop Shanahan shot 2-under-par 69 to take a 2-stroke lead over the field on Day 1 of the PIAA Class AAA Golf Championships at Heritage Hills in York.

Pennsbury's Jackie Rogowicz shot 74, a stroke behind the leaders in the girls' AAA competition.

Volleyball

Pennridge earned the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye for the District 1 Class AAA tournament, which is set to begin on Tuesday.

Pope John Paul II earned the top seed in Class AA. Sacred Heart is No. 1 in Class A.
