Tie keeps Pennsbury unbeaten

As they walked off their home field, exhausted after playing 100 minutes, Pennsbury girls' soccer players didn't look as if they had just completed an undefeated regular season.

Heads were down. Almost no one was smiling.

The Falcons were frustrated that a regular season featuring winning streaks of six and eight games and the program's first Suburban One League National Conference title ended the way it did, in a 1-1 tie against Council Rock South.

In other words, a draw wasn't the result Pennsbury had planned when it set its sights on an 18-game unbeaten streak.

Still, the Falcons, ranked fifth in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, finished the regular season at 15-0-3 overall and 11-0-3 in the conference.

"We went into this game with the mind-set that we already finished first in the SOL - we had it - but I feel like we didn't realize how tough South was," sophomore defender Caroline Foley said.

"They came out strong, and it kind of hit us like a truck."

For the Golden Hawks (11-7, 7-6-1), the tie stopped a tough three-game losing streak in which each contest was decided by a single goal.

"It means a lot," South senior forward Nikki Caffey said. "It sets our standards again and shows that we are capable of beating any team in this league if we come to play."

Pennsbury likely will be the top seed in the District 1 Class AAA tournament, and the Golden Hawks will hope that the three-game skid won't leave them out of the playoffs completely. Seedings will be decided Sunday.

"Sunday morning is going to be difficult," Caffey said. "We have to find out if we are in, but if we are in, we are going to come off this knowing that if we can play against Pennsbury we can play against anybody."

After the handshakes and a talk with their coaches, the Falcons let the moment finally hit them, posing for pictures and celebrating the accomplishment. A sense of unfinished business, though, lingered.
