IN 13 OF THE last 14 seasons, either George Washington or Frankford has captured a Public League football championship.

With the addition of defensive end, Shareef Miller, who transferred from Franford, a relatively inexperienced Eagles squad is looking to soar yet again, but the future is murkier for the Pioneers, who find themselves with several questions to answer.

What does all of that mean in AAAA play this season? Lookout for Northeast High; the Vikings have a few studs in defensive end Gladimir "The Destroyer" Paul (Virginia) and speedy quarterback Asa Manley. Schools making the leap to AAAA this year are: Martin Luther King, Bartram, Simon Gratz and Ben Franklin (each AAA last season); Roxborough is also up from AA.

Imhotep will try to reign supreme in AAA play after squashing AA competition the last two seasons, leaving a void in AA, which Del-Val and Prep Charter should battle over.

Del-Val is led by Troy Gore, who helped build Imhotep into a power. Two new programs, KIPP DuBois and Palumbo, have also emerged and are coached by first-year guys Keary Dias (from Osborne High in Atlanta, Ga.) and Scott Pitzner (also at Southern from 2011-2012) respectively. In the past, Palumbo had partnered with Furness and Franklin Learning Center, before striking out on its own this season.

(Strawberry Mansion declined to participate in this preview, citing the uncertain future of its program due to a player shortage).
