Sat. Pa. boys and girls: Boats row to national gold

Nine local varsity boats earned national titles Saturday at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Championships in Princeton Junction, N.J.

The Conestoga girls' lightweight four won in 5 minutes, 32.34 seconds, more than eight seconds ahead of second-place Shaker (N.Y.). The Pioneers also won the girls' four in 5:22.84.

The Roman Catholic boys' lightweight four captured first place in 4:50.42, two seconds faster than Belen Jesuit (Fla.).

The boys' lightweight eight title went to St. Joseph's Prep in 4:26.28. The Hawks topped second-place Belen Jesuit by nearly six seconds.

Episcopal Academy's Natalie Stuart won the girls' single in 6:30.34.

Malvern Prep took the boys' double in 5:17.93. Springside Chestnut Hill placed second (5:22.18).

Malvern also won the boys' four in 4:44.93. Roman Catholic (4:48.47) and Conestoga (4:52.23) came across next.

Shipley won the girls' four in 5:49.80, less than two seconds in front of Egg Harbor Township.

Haverford School (5:05.32) edged Harriton (5:06.57) to win the boys' quad.

Pa. Independent Schools Softball Championship

Taylor Lang led off the second inning with an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on an error to send host Episcopal Academy to a 1-0 victory over Agnes Irwin.

Episcopal's Alex Viscusi and Agnes Irwin's Katie Wenger each struck out 11 in dueling one-hitters.

Pa. Independent Schools Baseball Championship

Gardner Nutter pitched a complete game to lead Malvern Prep to a 5-0 victory over Perkiomen School at Upper Perkiomen.

District 1 Class AAA Baseball Semifinal

Billy Hitman delivered a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning to lift No. 4 seed Pope John Paul II to a 3-1 upset of No. 1 Holy Ghost Prep at Cairn University.
