Jerla goes out with a bang

N-G tops La Salle in losers bracket

IN HIS LAST HOME game at Ss. Neumann-Goretti, senior lefthander Charlie Jerla went out with a bang.

The 6-2, 180-pounder was dominant Saturday in the Saints' 1-0 victory against visiting La Salle in the Catholic League playoffs losers bracket.

Jerla, who is headed to Marist next season, allowed four hits and struck out five in just the 10th 1-0 game in CL history, according to TedSilary.com. His counterpart, lefty John Scheffey, was nearly as good for the Explorers, scattering six hits and striking out three.

Neumann-Goretti tallied its lone run in the second when Justin Curtin's single scored courtesy runner Joe Lolio.

Today at Widener University, the Saints will face Cardinal O'Hara, which bested N-G, 5-2, in the second round.

The winner of that game will face Roman Catholic, which is making its first CL championship appearance since 1992, on Wednesday at Widener.
