Pa. Boys: Tues. Pa. boys: Neshaminy names football coach

Mike Frederick, a defensive end in the NFL for five seasons, was approved by the Neshaminy school board Tuesday night as the high school's new football coach.

Mike Frederick, a defensive end in the NFL for five seasons, was approved by the Neshaminy school board Tuesday night as the high school's new football coach.

After starring as a two-way end at Neshaminy (Class of 1990) and Virginia, Frederick, 41, played for the Cleveland Browns (1995), Baltimore Ravens (1996-98), and Tennessee Titans (1999). He was selected in the third round, with the 94th overall pick, in the 1995 draft.

"This is my dream job," Frederick said of returning to Heartbreak Ridge. "When this opportunity came up, it was something I had to pursue."

It is Frederick's first head coaching position at the high school level. He was an assistant coach for one year at Baltimore's Gilman School.

"Mike didn't come in during the interview process and talk about wins and losses," Neshaminy athletic director Tom Magdelinskas said. "He talked about teaching kids about life though football. That was impressive."

Great Valley. Dan Ellis, who developed a high-scoring offense at West Chester East, was named football coach at Great Valley.

Ellis, a former quarterback at Downingtown and Virginia, guided West Chester East to a 12-21 record over the last three seasons. Before that, he was in charge for three years at Springfield (Delco).

W.C. East. Dave Gueriera, the offensive coordinator at Episcopal Academy, will replace Ellis at West Chester East, pending school board approval next week. Before spending two years at Episcopal, Gueriera, 35, was the offensive coordinator at Harriton and quarterbacks coach at Malvern Prep.

Baseball

With first place in the Suburban One League National Conference on the line, Council Rock South turned back neighboring rival Council Rock North, 3-2, in a heated baseball matchup in Holland.

There was plenty of chirping coming from both benches.

"It's more than a rivalry," South senior third baseman Jake Nevin said. "This game is for bragging rights. It means so much to both teams."

Golden Hawks senior righthander Greg Paprocki went the distance, allowing four hits and walking none.

South, which managed four hits, improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in National Conference. North slipped to 6-3 and 4-3.

In other Suburban One National play, after surrendering a five-run lead in the top half of the seventh, Jack Larini made sure the game didn't get away from Abington. He delivered a walk-off single to beat visiting Bensalem, 7-6.

Central. Haverford High's Mike Sardella had two doubles and a triple, and drove in five runs. His biggest contribution might have come when he scored the winning run on Brandon Rogers' walk-off suicide squeeze to beat visiting Harriton, 10-9.

Del-Val. Chichester scored four runs to take the lead in the top of the seventh but couldn't hold on for the comeback win. John Bellano lined a walk-off single to lift Interboro to a 9-8 home victory.

Catholic. Dan Hammer earned a complete-game victory and scored the winning run in Father Judge's 5-4 win at St. Joseph's Prep.

Hammer led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly.
