Sat. Pa. boys and girls: Radnor outlasts Episcopal

Radnor's Will Girton traded in his catcher's mask for another hat Saturday afternoon: that of hero relief pitcher.

Girton took the hill in the third inning and proceeded to strike out four, allowing two unearned runs over seven innings of relief in what would become a 7-5 nonleague baseball victory at Episcopal Academy.

Radnor took the lead with two outs in the top of the ninth when Mike Lanzone was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Connor Wilson. James Lofton added an insurance run by scoring on a wild pitch.

Girton, usually Radnor's backup catcher, was pressed into action because the Red Raiders needed to save their starters for a packed slate of coming league games.

"We kept saying, 'Are you OK? Are you OK?' after every inning," Radnor coach Mark Jordan said. "Every time, he said: 'Yeah, I'm fine.' "

Also in nonleague play:

Father Judge walked off with a 4-3 win over visiting Lansdale Catholic. Tim Ulrich led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. Frank Nolan pinch-ran, stole third, and scored the winning run after Ryan O'Neill's single ricocheted off the pitcher's leg.

Mike Solomon drove in the only run with a single in the sixth, as host Haverford School clipped Friends' Central, 1-0. Mike Warnick struck out eight in a shutout.

TJ Pagan went 3 for 3 with three runs, two RBIs, and a triple to power Penn Charter past visiting Lawrenceville, 19-2.

Mike Styer played a couple of roles in Malvern Prep's doubleheader split with visiting Abington Heights. Styer hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the Friars' 9-8, Game 1 loss. Inserted into the lineup at third base for the nightcap, Styer went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI as the Friars cruised, 11-1.

Ryan Coonahan went 3 for 3 with three RBIs to help La Salle hold off visiting Archbishop Wood, 7-5.

You can't score if you don't have the ball, so Malvern Prep was in good hands with Charles Kelly, who won 15 of 21 faceoffs in an 11-6 nonleague victory over visiting Central Bucks East.

Catholic League. Ryan Gallagher delivered the winning goal off an assist from Kyle Wilson in overtime to give Cardinal O'Hara a 5-4 victory at Archbishop Carroll.

David Pope and Chris Stone went up, and meet records came down at the Springside Chestnut Hill Invitational.

Pope, of Episcopal Academy, went 44 feet, 71/2 inches in the triple jump, shattering the meet record of 44-1 set in 2011 by Hiree Peoples of Girard College.

Stone, of Springfield (Montco), cleared 6-81/4 in the high jump, breaking the record of 6-6 set by Phil Thomas of Chestnut Hill Academy in 2009.

Nathan Kidambi and Andrew Gushner's 9-8 (7-3) victory at first doubles highlighted Haverford School's 6-1 triumph over Penn Charter in the finals of the Mayor's Cup at Legacy Tennis Center in East Falls.

The Fords captured the cup for the second consecutive season.

Down goes Harriton, thanks to Downingtown West.

The Cougars handed the defending state-champion Rams their first Pennsylvania loss of the year, 6-5, behind four goals from Temple recruit Nicole Barretta.

East took a 4-1 lead into halftime, and Haleigh Wurzel made it hold up with 10 saves.

Also in nonleague play:

Olivia Muscella delivered the winner in Great Valley's 12-11 triumph at Hatboro-Horsham.

Haley Wentzel had seven goals and two assists, and Boyertown breezed at North Penn, 18-7.

Spring Fling. Hannah Keating combined for 13 goals in a pair of wins for Agnes Irwin, which defeated St. Anne's Belfield (Va.), 11-7, and Connelly School of the Holy Child (Md.), 14-9, in Alexandria, Va.

Elizabeth Durham had a hand in seven Shipley runs during the Gators' 11-5 victory over visiting Friends' Central in the Friends Schools League. Durham finished 4 for 4 with two triples, three RBIs, and four runs.

Nonleague. Olivia Chase went 4 for 4 with two runs and five RBIs to power Upper Darby past Bonner-Prendergast, 13-3.
