Episcopal girls defeat Germantown Academy
"Go get it."
It's a phrase Megan Quinn repeatedly uses to characterize what Episcopal Academy needs to do to win its first Inter-Ac title.
On Saturday night the senior forward took her game to another level in the second half, making sure her team would have that opportunity, as the Churchwomen defeated rival Germantown Academy, 51-40.
Quinn had a game-high 23 points, 15 of them in a second half in which she took it to the Patriots, finding her way to the basket and getting to the foul line.
"Going into this game we knew there was no possibility that we could lose this game," Quinn said. "At the end we felt pretty confident. . . . We're excited, but we still have to finish out strong."
The Villanova recruit was helped by sophomore guard Sarah Abbonizio, who had 16 points and was consistent throughout the contest.
Abbonizio also had a three-pointer in the fourth quarter that put her team up by six, at the time the largest lead for either side, and shifted momentum Episcopal's way.
Knotted at 20 going into halftime, both squads battled for every bucket, as the first 16 minutes was a back-and-forth and quite even affair.
It wasn't until the third quarter that the Churchwomen (18-3, 9-1) started to take control, as Quinn scored the first six points of the second half.
Even with Quinn scoring nine of Episcopal's 11 third-quarter points, the Patriots (14-10, 6-4) weren't going away easily, and headed into the fourth trailing by only three.
Both teams have two remaining Inter-Ac conference games before the Independent Schools State tournament. If Episcopal wins out, it will get at least a share of the Inter-Ac title with Notre Dame. The Patriots can play spoiler to the Irish, when the two face off Tuesday.
"It's something we really want to take care of," Quinn said. "Go strong the next two games, go get it, and take it."
At the beginning of the season, one of EA's preseason goals was to win a league championship. Now it is within reach, only two games away.
They are going to have to go get it.
