Fri. Pa. boys: Alston sparks Haverford School

Levan Alston provided all of Haverford School's overtime offense on Friday afternoon as the Fords rallied at Malvern Prep, 61-58, in an Inter-Ac League basketball game.

The sophomore guard scored all 12 of Haverford's OT points to finish with a game-high 17. Alston also dished out five assists.

Chris Morgan chipped in with nine steals. The senior guard scored six points in the second half. Eric Anderson, a senior forward, had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Will Powers led Malvern with 16 points, six of which came in the first quarter.

Also in the Inter-Ac, Frank Jackson dropped in a lefthanded layup at the buzzer to lift Springside Chestnut Hill at Penn Charter, 39-38. The point guard finished with seven points. Andrew Dowds led the way with 14 points.

Suburban One. Chris Akins received a full-court pass from Noah Melchior before hitting a layup at the buzzer to lift North Penn over visiting Central Bucks East, 53-51. Mike Swanson led the Knights with eight rebounds, and Melchior added six assists.

Ja'er Brown scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter as Truman rallied to edge host Council Rock North, 48-45. Merdic Green added six of his game-high 20 points in the fourth as the Tigers outscored C.R. North, 18-11, in the period.

John Kanas knocked down a pair of three-pointers, and Souderton topped host Central Bucks West, 53-47.

Central. John Fender hit a three from the corner with less than a minute left to help Strath Haven edge host Springfield (Delco), 46-44. The senior scored 13 points in each half and knocked down five threes.

B.J. Johnson's eight fourth-quarter points helped Lower Merion roll past visiting Harriton, 58-41. The senior headed for Syracuse finished with 19 points.

Catholic. Junior guard Shep Garner recorded 10 steals and a game-high 19 points as Roman Catholic topped visiting Bonner-Prendergast, 74-39. Manny Taylor, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 11 points.

Tyler Reed grabbed eight rebounds and added 12 points as Archbishop Ryan eased past visiting Lansdale Catholic, 47-26. Gage Galeone had five steals, and scored all seven of his points came in the second quarter.

Steve Smith scored all 20 of his points in the second half and added eight rebounds as La Salle toppled visiting Bishop McDevitt, 72-56.

Public. Brandon Austin's 13 points and Dymir Logan's 10 enabled Imhotep Charter to top host Frankford, 46-37.

Friends Schools. Matt Rodden's game-high 17 points and six rebounds helped Shipley knock off host Moorestown Friends, 59-30.

 

Wrestling

Chris Velez's 35-second pin at 152 pounds was the quickest of host Central's six wins by fall in a 54-22 triumph over Mariana Bracetti in the Public League semifinals.

The Lancers will host Washington in the final at 7 Wednesday night.

 

Football Recruiting

Cardinal O'Hara junior Thaddius Smith will travel to Boston College on Saturday for the Eagles' junior day. Projected to play wideout in college, Smith already holds offers from Temple and Rutgers.

Imhotep's DeAndre Scott has racked up nearly 10 college offers, including from Arizona State, Temple, Boston College, and Miami. The 5-10 junior safety projects to play cornerback in college.
