Another Shields in the end zone

Passing along some city high school football tidbits . . .

AT ONE END of the touchdowns-by-brothers spectrum, you have West Catholic's Hollomons and completely at the other you have Roman Catholic's Shieldses.

Two years apart, Rob (interception in 2007) and Brandon Hollomon (punt in 2009) notched 99-yard scores on returns. Also 2 years apart, Kerry (rush) and Collin Shields (fumble return) posted 1-yarders.

The Shields guys, a pair of linemen, had their fun against Roxborough.

Collin's score occurred in the second quarter of last Thursday's 48-0 roasting. Yes, Kerry was in attendance.

"He'd always rubbed it in, that he had a touchdown and I didn't," Collin said, laughing. "This one kind of shut him up. Once I scored, I looked up in the stands and pointed right at him. I could tell he was happy for me."

The play began as a rush.

"I was lined up at the left defensive end," Collin said. "I broke right through the line and forced the fumble. Their quarterback was on it first, but then it squirted away from him and the ball was laying right there. I just picked it up and went into the end zone.

"I was really happy. I remember when Kerry scored his. I was on the sideline [as a backup lineman]. They worked on that play in practice. Called it the Shields Cattle. I was so excited for him."

The Shields brothers began their high school stints at North Catholic and transferred to Roman for 2010-11, following NC's closure.

"I had a fumble return at North in a JV game," Collin said.

In this game, coach Joe McCourt hoped to get rushing touchdowns for his three senior starters on the O-line. JJ Logan posted a 5-yarder in the third quarter and Steve Henry tallied from the 2 in the fourth.

"Since I already had the defensive touchdown," Collin said, "coach said there wasn't a need to get another."

While working the final game of his 52-year career (49 at the scholastic level) last Thursday, as Northeast beat Central, 14-12, head ref Tom McClain got to share the experience with family. His son, Kevin, was the line judge . . . Prep Charter's Vion Dolo needed just five attempts to throw for four TDs vs. Furness. John Graham and Ronald Stokes snagged two apiece. Longtime Daily News statman Mark "Frog" Carfagno handled PA duties for that one . . . Twenty-seven plays in Mastery North's 34-26 win over Gratz netted at least 10 yards. In the first 20 minutes of Northeast-Central, just two did so . . . The football squad representing now-defunct Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, in South Philly, produced prolific passers Skyler Mornhinweg (SJ Prep, Class of 2012) and Michael Keir (Roman, '13). Mornhinweg, now at Florida, finished with 4,859 yards, the No. 5 total in city history. Keir is No. 7 at 4,744 . . . Frankford's Tim DiGiorgio ranks No. 2 in Pub annals with 4.061 career passing yards. The No. 1 guy, '10 Northeast grad Malik Stokes, needed four seasons to collect 4,170. DiGiorgio played just two . . . DiGiorgio is tops among lefties. That honor formerly belonged to 2004 Germantown Academy grad Sean Grieve (3,801) . . .

Elijah Hardy, who played for West Philly in '11, but then spent time at Glen Mills, made his '12 debut for the Speedboys on Thanksgiving vs. Overbrook. He ran for 115 yards and the OT score in a 12-6 win . . . Overtime was not friendly to 'Brook this season. The Panthers went 0-3 and one of those games required three extra sessions . . . Furness' passers went 8-for-33 for 125 yards and six of the 12 games featured no aeriel yardage. The city record belongs to Comm Tech's '07 squad, which went 6-for-41 for 46 yards . . . Ss. Neumann-Goretti wore throwback orange jerseys for its game with Southern. Orange was Neumann's primary color before the merger with Goretti. Pirates, the ol' nickname, was on the back of the jerseys . . .

Judge owns 23 consecutive wins over Lincoln. Roman's winning streak against Roxborough stands at 20 . . . Khaleel Stewart ran or passed on 261 of King's 400 plays this season (65.3 percent). He collected 616 yards of rushing (77), passing (526) and receiving (13), for 59 percent of the team's 1,044 . . . Fixing Thanksgiving flubs: Dylan Dopkin blocked a punt for Ryan vs. Washington. Max (not Alex) Pascavitch had a TD catch for Judge vs. Lincoln. Eric Holt blocked a punt for Neumann-Goretti vs. Southern. Mark (not Mike) McCray intercepted a pass for Germantown vs. King.
