Wed. Pa. boys' roundup: La Salle captures Catholic lacrosse crown

La Salle avenged last year's championship game loss to St. Joseph's Prep by edging the Hawks, 8-7, in the Catholic League boys' lacrosse title game on Wednesday night at Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Matt Rambo scored five goals for the Explorers, who will face Public League champ Northeast for the District 12 crown on Thursday at Germantown.

Prep's Pat Walsh cut the lead to 8-7 with his fourth goal of the game with 3 minutes, 20 seconds left, but could not add the tying goal.

Public. John Liebig's second goal of the game was scored in overtime off an Eric O'Brien assist, boosting Northeast to the league championship with a 4-3 win over Washington at Simon Gratz.

Dave Fieldhouse and Eric O'Brien also scored for the defending champion Vikings, and Tori Gordon netted two goals for Washington. Northeast goalie Scott McGrath made seven saves.

Tri-County. Collegium Charter finished a 20-0 season by winning its first league championship, 9-2, over Perkiomen School at the United Sports Center in Downingtown.

Dan Anderson, headed to Marywood University in the fall, scored four goals and assisted on two others, Bubba Arroyo scored three goals and goalie Greg Buracker made 11 saves to beat the two-time defending champion Indians.

Facing a 7-2 deficit after four innings, GAMP rallied for a five-run sixth inning and pulled off a 9-7 upset of Central in the Public League playoff semifinals at Ashburn Field.

The Pioneers, who had dropped regular-season verdicts against Central by 9-6 and 18-2, put together six hits in the sixth inning, including Nick Carine's double. Desmond Drummond contributed three hits, and Carine was one of four GAMP players with two hits each in a 13-hit attack.

Jacob Kurtz pitched a complete game for the win, putting GAMP in its first league final since 2002 against Frankford.

In the first game of the semifinal doubleheader, Hector Cerda pitched five innings for the win and helped himself by lining a double and a triple for two RBIs as Frankford defeated Washington, 11-1.

Omar Cruz went 3 for 4, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Pioneers.

District 1 Class AAAA. Central Bucks West, the No. 8 seed from the North, registered a 4-0 upset at Interboro, the top seed from the South, in the second round.

Rich Ciarlante struck out 10, walked none and allowed just two hits for West. Marty Martens and Jake Poeske each had two hits and drove in a run to put the Bucks in the quarterfinals against Central Bucks South.

Coatesville scored three runs in each of the last two innings and survived a seventh-inning rally by host Penncrest to post an 11-8 win. Brian Brown went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Clint Leslie, Tom Stumm and C. J. Young each added two hits and a run batted in.

Home runs by Brian Happ and Will Sasser carried Central Bucks South past host Spring-Ford, 10-4.

District 1 Class AAA. Robert Knox led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run, igniting Upper Moreland's 3-1 quarterfinal win over visiting Sun Valley. Kyle Walder tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts.
