Thurs. Pa. girls' roundup: Shanahan secures softball title

Senior righthanded pitcher Kate Poppe led Bishop Shanahan to a second straight Ches-Mont League National Division softball championship with a 4-2 victory over visiting Downingtown West on Thursday.

Poppe, who had not allowed more than one earned run in a game this spring before giving up two to the Whippets, struck out 11 and got the win when Shanahan plated three sixth-inning runs after an error.

Also in the Ches-Mont, Kennett freshman Chloe Chapman went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Mikala Slicer and Katie DeStefano delivered two-run doubles in support of pitcher Brooke Harner in the Blue Demons' 9-0 shutout of visiting Octorara.

Bicentennial. Keli Krause broke the Christopher Dock school record for career strikeouts but visiting Bristol spoiled the occasion by beating Krause, 3-2.

Kaley Crohe's two-run single with one out in the seventh inning was the decisive hit for the Warriors. Krause fanned 13 batters, boosting her total to 547 strikeouts, topping the mark of 538 set by Megan Rice in 2006.

Suburban One. Freshman designated hitter Nikki Wild picked a perfect spot for her first varsity hit, singling home Jen Walker with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to end Neshaminy's 2-1 thriller over visiting Truman. Lauren Quense struck out 14.

Hatboro-Horsham pitcher Maggie Shaffer outdueled Central Bucks South's Haileigh Stocks, as the visiting Hatters escaped with an 8-6 win.

Catholic. Brianna Needles' two-run single with two outs in the sixth capped Archbishop Wood's 5-4 comeback win over visiting Little Flower.

Public. Philadelphia Academy Charter's Rebeckah Medina went 5 for 5 at the plate, including a single that scored Cait Steward in the bottom of the seventh to beat visiting Prep Charter, 7-6.

Central. Garnet Valley's 9-3 success against visiting Haverford High included Shannon Moore's two-run homer, and Gina Ricci's three hits and two runs scored.

Nonleague. Nazareth Academy rallied for five seventh-inning runs, aided by Brittany Colombo's two RBIs, and jolted host Pottsgrove, 6-5.

Run-scoring hits off the bats of Katherine Nichols and Liz Turner in the bottom of the ninth made Delco Christian a 6-5 winner over visiting Friends Select.

Wissahickon's Laura Frankenfield poured in seven goals, including the 200th of her career, as the Trojans got past visiting Gwynedd-Mercy, 10-7, in a nonleague contest.

Hanna Bogorowski scored off a pass from Lizzie Tillger with 1 minute, 49 seconds left to give Germantown Academy a 13-10 lead, and the Patriots held on to clip host Germantown Friends, 13-12.

Bicentennial. The last of Haley Smith's five goals gave the Jenkintown junior 100 career goals, highlighting the Drakes' 14-3 win over visiting Delco Christian.

Mary Newell won the shot put and discus events, and guided Villa Jospeh Marie to the team title in the Catholic Academies championships at Villa Maria.

Gwynedd-Mercy's Emma Keenan (400, 800) and Olivia Rosenberger (long jump, triple jump) each won two individual events and ran on two winning relay teams.

Frankford's Aneldy Rivera went unbeaten through 11 rounds and captured the singles title title at the 38th annual all-Public League badminton tournment at Martin Luther King. Hyeju Lee and Virginia Brubaker of Central won the doubles title for the second time in three years.
