Tues. Pa. girls' roundup: Sun Valley drops Shanahan

Alie Alkins came through with a winning hit for the second straight game, allowing Sun Valley to hand visiting Bishop Shanahan its first Ches-Mont League loss in softball since 2010, 1-0, in nine innings Tuesday.

Kate Poppe of Shanahan (11-1) held the Vanguards (9-2) to one hit through eight innings before Taylor Sitale led off the ninth with a bunt hit. Alkins' long hit into the outfield gap brought Sitale home with the deciding run.

Poppe struck out 19 batters, including 11 of the first 12 hitters she faced. Sun Valley's Jamie Lachall scattered six hits in the shutout.

Also in the Ches-Mont, sophomore shortstop Sarah McDade singled in the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and another run scored on an error to boost West Chester East past visiting Unionville, 3-2.

Downingtown West's 10th win was a 10-4 effort at West Chester Rustin in which Sydney Roby pitched a complete game and also hit two bases-empty home runs. Rustin's Anna Stewnetz hit her fourth homer of the spring.

Suburban One. Wissahickon's Katie Ziegler (19 strikeouts) and Cheltenham's Lesenia Santiago combined for 31 strikeouts, but Ziegler went home with the win after the visiting Trojans scored two runs in the top of the 12th inning for a 7-5 victory.

Ziegler collected 19 strikeouts with one walk, and also went 3 for 6 with two RBIs, and Rebecca Marinucci added two hits, two runs, and two RBIs off Santiago, who had a dozen strikeouts.

Pennsbury's 8-0 shutout of visiting William Tennent was a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts by pitcher Val Buehler. Mackenzie Obert poked four hits and Christina Bascara drove in five runs.

Catholic. Archbishop Carroll freshman Allyson Taylor turned her first varsity pitching start into her first win, 13-0, at Bishop McDevitt with a seven-strikeout one-hitter.

Jackie Marshall drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Molly Rafferty struck out 14 Archbishop Prendergast batters as host Cardinal O'Hara picked up a 6-5 win.

Lansdale Catholic pitcher Mary Cate Scott lost her shutout in the seventh inning and settled for an 8-2 win at Little Flower with eight strikeouts.

St. Hubert's Erica Ragazzone hit a three-run homer, drove in five runs and also handled the pitching in a 12-2 win over visiting Archbishop Wood.

Central. Upper Darby edged visiting Springfield (Delco), 3-2, as Amy Jackson scored all three runs, including a home run in the third inning and scoring on Olivia Chase's bases-loaded single in the eighth.

Inter-Ac. Aly Markey drove in five runs with three hits and also scored twice as Springside handed visiting Baldwin an 11-1 setback.

Agnes Irwin plated two eighth-inning runs on Georgia Fortunato's RBI single and a passed ball, and escaped with a 6-5 win at Germantown Academy.

Pioneer Athletic. Kristen Zeigler lined a two-out, two-run single and Berlynn Hall scored a pair of runs to push Perkiomen Valley past visiting Upper Perkiomen, 4-1.

Maddie Lowery led Methacton to a 16-5 win at Pottsgrove by pitching a complete game, and going 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in.

Boyertown's Emily Allen lost a one-hit shutout in the seventh inning but got the win in a 6-2 triumph over visiting Pope John Paul II. Brianna DePriest drove in four runs.

Catholic Academies. Nazareth Academy sophomore Brianna Perri threw a 10-0 five-inning no-hitter against visiting Sacred Heart, striking out 11.

Sarah Carey and Katelyn Sundheim combined for seven hits and eight RBIs as Gwynedd-Mercy broke open a close game with an 11-run sixth inning and beat visiting Villa Maria, 17-7.

Villa Joseph Marie converted two RBIs each by Rachel Arndt and Kimmy Juhas into an 8-2 win at St. Basil.

Episcopal Academy (7-4) needed a goal in overtime from M.C. Curran to hand host Notre Dame (8-1) its first loss, 13-12, in an Inter-Ac League game.

The Churchmen got three goals each by Lynda Michaels and Taryn Gallagher, and four from Curran to offset a seven-goal game by Carlyann McCabe of Notre Dame, ranked No. 7 in the state by phillylacrosse.com.

Springside used the balanced scoring provided by Kitty Morrissey's four goals, and three each by Libbie Maine and Ellie Stout to claim an 18-13 win over visiting Baldwin.

Central. Kiersten Daly's fifth goal of the game was scored unassisted two minutes into overtime to make Lower Merion a 10-9 winner over visiting Penncrest.

Katie Melvin's seven goals and two assists steered Harriton past host Ridley, 17-6.
