Fri. Pa. boys' and girls' roundup: Conestoga rallies for win

In its season opener on Friday night, Conestoga rallied on the road from a five-goal second half deficit and toppled the nation's top boys' lacrosse team, Calvert Hall (Md.), 11-10.

The Pioneers scored the game's final five goals, including Brad Lord's winner from Connor Frisina with 1 minute, 57 seconds left.

Lord finished with five goals, and Frisina recorded three assists. Robbie Zonino posted the win with six saves.

Calvert Hall is ranked No. 1 by ESPN Rise, while Conestoga is No. 11. It was also the first night game at Calvert Hall.

In other nonleague action, Haverford School had its 30-game winning streak snapped with a 5-4 loss to Landon School (Md.) in the LacrossePlayground.com Classic at Annapolis.

Matt Rambo scored three times and Corey Shaffer turned away six shots as La Salle downed host Radnor, 10-5.

Kevin McQuiston found the net four times as visiting Kennett held off nonleague foe Central Bucks South, 9-8. The junior attack scored three of his goals in the first half and added three assists. Brady O'Neill chipped in with a pair of assists.

Tyler Williams netted three goals and assisted two more as Downingtown West bested Abington, 13-10. Eric Rankel added three goals and one assist for the Whippets. Ryan Ambler led Abington with five goals and Austin Pifani recovered five groundballs.

Ryan McDonald had a goal and three assists to lift Pennsbury over host Plymouth Whitemarsh, 6-5. Drew Sweetland earned the win with nine saves.

Girls' Lacrosse

Katie Karsh's seven goals helped host Upper Darby turn away nonleague opponent Sacred Heart, 15-12. Shelby Miller preserved the win with five saves. Senior Eileen Dombrowski scored seven times for Sacred Heart.

Also in nonleague action, Kaitlin Suzuki had a pair of goals and three draw controls to lift North Penn over visiting Boyertown, 12-7.

Baseball

Scott Ervin's single in the top of the ninth cleared the bases on Friday afternoon and provided the runs visiting Engineering & Science needed to top Public League Division C foe Saul, 7-5, on Opening Day.

Ervin's game-winning hit drove in three runs and came with two outs. He finished with three hits.

Also in the Public League, host Mastbaum rallied from four runs down to knock off Germantown, 10-9. In the bottom of the seventh, Dio Perez scored the winning run on a two-out error. Khary Redmond knocked in a pair of runs and stole three bases to lead Germantown.

Disney Spring Training. Mike Piscopo and P.J. Acierno each knocked in a pair of runs as LaSalle downed Frankford, 11-5, in the Orlando, Fla. tournament. First baseman Chris Melillo went three for four, with two runs and an RBI.

Nonleague. Bill Ford knocked a two-run homer and pitched four scoreless innings as Malvern Prep topped host Archbishop Carroll, 8-1. Nick Bateman and C.J. Costales also hit home runs.

Justin Price was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to bring home the winning run as Archbishop Ryan topped visiting Lansdale Catholic, 9-8.

Softball

Brianna Davis' bases-loaded bunt in the bottom of the seventh handed host Girard College a 13-12 walk-off win over nonleague foe Plumstead Christian.

Tayla Gould scored the winning run, knocked in three runs and pitched seven innings to post the win. It was the 100th win for head coach Kevin Ciorno, who has spent 14 seasons with the Cavaliers.

Also in nonleague action, Sam Esque hurled seven shutout innings and struck out eight as Springfield (Delco) downed Kennett, 5-0. Marykate Caggiano went two for three with an RBI and a run scored.

Rachel Gadbow's three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth provided the difference as W.C. Henderson topped visiting Marple Newtown, 4-1. Lauren Butts posted the win as she pitched seven innings, with six strikeouts and three hits allowed.

Catholic Academies. In her first varsity start, freshman Nicole Eberhard led host St. Basil to a 3-2 win over Gwynedd-Mercy. The righthander pitched a complete game, walked one and fanned seven. The Panthers walked off with the win after Caitlin Brogan scored in the bottom ofthe seventh on a throwing error.

Central. Gina Ricci's single in the bottom of the seventh drove in Nicole Clayton as Garnet Valley rallied for a 5-4 walk-off win against visiting Conestoga. Clayton posted the win with seven innings pitched and no walks.
