Tues. Pa. boys' roundup: Abington surprises Great Valley

Abington (18-6), the No. 11 seed, assured itself of a berth in the state tournament and advanced to the district quarterfinals by beating the sixth-seeded Patriots (19-5).

Durham finished with 16 points, Matt Penecale had 10, and Griffin hit three three-point baskets.

Also in Class AAAA, top-seeded Chester (24-0) extended its win streak to 50 games with a 59-31 win over visiting Methacton as Erikk Wright's 16 points topped a dozen Clippers scorers.

Norristown will be Chester's quarterfinal opponent after the Eagles beat host Pennsbury, 59-45. Norristown took the lead for good with a 24-10 second-period outburst in which Jahbri Hargrove scored 8 of his 13 points, and teammate Luke Kelley finished the contest with 15 points.

Lower Merion's 64-46 success against visiting Plymouth Whitemarsh featured B. J. Johnson's 22 points, Raheem Hall's 17 and Darryl Reynolds' 13 rebounds.

Down by a point entering the fourth quarter, Wissahickon rallied to defeat visiting Bensalem, 60-53, as Jordan Reed (28 points) and Tanoh Kpassagnon (21) combined for 17 points in the 27-19 fourth period. Chase Wilson, who did not score in the first three quarters, hit a pair of late threes.

After losing to Cheltenham by 14 points in the first week of the season, host Central Bucks West got a measure of revenge for one of its two losses this winter with a 62-47 playoff win.

The Bucks' balanced attack included Derek Dyer's 15 points, Jack Rogers' 13, and 11 each by Tyler Schechter and Sam Lis.

Tyler Burke came off the Coatesville bench to post 10 points and 15 rebounds as the Red Raiders topped visiting Penn Wood, 71-62. Andre Boggs added 12 points and eight assists, and Leroy Hoggard hauled in 12 rebounds.

Public. Boys' Latin advanced to Saturday's league championship after beating Communications Tech, 70-59, in the league semifinals at Southern. Maurice Watson scored 23 points, and Carlos Taylor added 17 points and nine rebounds.

District 1 Class A. Christopher Dock got through its opening-round game, 45-33, over visiting Morrisville with a double-double by Najee Miller of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Tri-State Christian. The Christian Academy needed Jeremiah Williams' three in the final minute to slip past visiting King's Christian, 55-54, in the league quarterfinals. Andrew Boykin contributed 18 points and 8 rebounds to the victory.

Bowling

Tyler Gondos rolled a 216-203-199–618 series and led Roman Catholic to a 2,641-2,608 quarterfinal win over St. Joseph's Prep in the Catholic League playoffs.

Father Judge also advanced, knocking down Neumann-Goretti, 2,951-2,660, behind Dan Matase's 238-258-233–729 effort.
