Maurice Watson poured in 42 points on Saturday afternoon and eclipsed Wilt Chamberlain on the career points list as Boys' Latin captured the Public League Class AAA boys' basketball title with a 81-60 win over Philadelphia Electrical at Ben Franklin.
Watson's game-high points moved him to eighth all-time in Southeastern Pennsylvania and second behind Maureece Rice's 2,681 for the Public League mark. Watson now has 2,228 points.
Watson made three three-pointers and shot 17 for 20 from the line.
Along with Chamberlain, the senior guard passed former Episcopal Academy guard Wayne Ellington and former Pennsbury forward Dalton Pepper.
In the Class AAAA title game, Bartram repeated as champs as it held on to an early lead to top Fels, 57-49.
The Maroon Wave led by 13 points at the half. Senior point guard Gary Gordon scored 10 of his game-high17 points in the fourth quarterto seal the win. Junior shooting guardTarrieck Williams added 10 rebounds.
Danil Mateo had 15 point to lead Fels.
In the Class AA final, Samir Doughty's running layup with 19 seconds left sealed Communications Tech's 58-55 win over Vaux at Ben Franklin.
The Phoenix trailed by five points at halftime before putting together a 21-14 third quarter. Terrence Brown's 20 points led the way. Rysheed Jordan had a team-high 19 points for Vaux.
Constitution rolled to an easy 72-51 win over Math, Civics & Sciences to capture its second straight Class A title. Malik Starks and Jeremiah Worthem each had 15 points.
Bicentennial. Tim Lazorko hit a pair of foul shots with a little more than a minute left and Holy Ghost Prep held on to top Lower Moreland, 37-34, for its third straight league title.
Lazorko finished with nine points and added three assists. Jeff Ainsley and Jack Kalnes both chipped in with four steals.
Girls' Basketball
North Penn took its first lead with 5 minutes left and avoided an upset as the ninth-seeded Maidens turned away visiting 24th-seed Council Rock North, 48-42, in the first round of the District 1 Class AAAA playoffs.
Junior forward Lauren Crisler stringed together five straight points to take a 39-38 lead and Vicky Tumasz hit six foul shots to seal the win.
The victory marked the 400th career win for North Penn head coach Maggie deMarteleire. The coach is in her fifth year with the Maidens. She spent 16 seasons with Lansdale Catholic, where she posted 318 wins.
In other first round action, Alex Louin scored eight of her 14 points in the third quarter to help Mount St. Joseph pull away from visiting Radnor, 58-21. Meg Geatens chipped in with nine rebounds and three steals.
Bicentennial. Christopher Dock relied on Laura Swintoski's 13 points and five rebounds to capture its first Bicentennial League championship with a 41-32 win over Morrisville at Holy Family.
Alex Wheatley hauled in 19 rebounds as Council Rock South cruised past visiting Interboro, 62-23. The senior forward bound for Princeton added five steals, four assists and a pair of a blocks.
Kate Fitzpatrick got off to a slow start before leading host Upper Darby to an easy 51-34 win over Pennsbury. The senior forward was held scoreless before she dropped 10 of her game-high 20 in the second quarter.
Indoor Track and Field
Chestnut Hill's Dustin Wilson set a meet record and recorded the state's top time for this season with an 8:47.18 mark in the 3,000 meters at the boys' TFCAGP 47th Meet of Champions at Lehigh University.
Eric Futch of Penn Wood captured first place in both the 60-meter hurdles and 200 meters. His time of 7.95 in the hurdles is a meet record and No. 2 in the state and No. 3 in the nation. Chris Williams of Strath Haven set a meet record in the pole vault with a mark of 15-1 and La Salle's 4x800 relay finished in 7:59.16 for a meet record. Tom Coyle highlighted the relay with a 1:54.0 split.
Pennsbury' Sara Sargent used a thin margin to top North Penn's Meghan McGovern in the mile at the girls' DVTCA Meet of Champions on Friday night at Lehigh. Sargent finished in 5:00.29 and McGovern came in at 5:00.48.
Girls' Bowling
Archbishop Ryan captured its first Catholic League title since 2007 with a 1890-1794 win over Archbishop Prendergast at Thunderbird Lanes.
Sophomore Tori Cruz led the Ragdolls with a 220 game and 591 series. Megan Huh had a 195 game and 560 series for Prendie. Last season, Prendie topped Ryan in the title game.
