Sat. Pa. boys’ roundup: Glen Mills captures Kennett Duals

Saturday's snowfall diminished the size of the field for the Kennett Duals wrestling tournament from 10 teams to six, but it did not diminish the excitement of the Glen Mills-Upper Darby match that decided the champion.

Glen Mills (14-1) swept its four matches to take the team title, capped by a 31-30 verdict over the runner-up Royals (14-3). Pottstown finished third.

Travis Abbott gave the Bulls an early lift with a first-period reversal that allowed him to pin Long Le in 1 minute, 33 seconds at 120 pounds. Marquese Redmon added a 43-second pin at 195, and Derrick Carter used a takedown with a minute left in the heavyweight match to edge Ayitey Kwei-Quaye, 4-3, and provide a 31-27 lead with one bout left.

Upper Darby's Anthony Petril won by 7-1 at 103, but was two points short of getting the needed four points for a major decision.

Buckley Duals. Host Haverford School and Northern Lehigh each went 4-1 in matches in the seven-team event, and Northern Lehigh beat the Fords, 36-28, head-to-head.

For Haverford, Ron Tassoni had five wins at 170 pounds, including four pins, and L.J. Barlow added five wins with three falls.

Spartan Clash. Wayne Armstrong won five matches in the round-robin format at 138 pounds, Dave Forte matched that effort at 145, and Sonny Armstrong added four wins at 170 to help Interboro take the team title with 104 points in a six-team field at Springfield (Montco). The Bucs edged runner-up Whitehall by one point.

Pioneer Athletic. Upper Perkiomen (11-7 overall, 3-1 league) handed host Methacton (12-2, 3-1) its first league loss, 51-16, with pins by Trevor Weeks (145), Ray Young (152), Dalton Fleming (195), Tyler Godshall (220), Dustin Steffenino (106), and Wolfgang McStravick (138).

Tyler Burke's 13 points helped Ches-Mont League National Division leader Coatesville (11-2 overall, 9-0 league) rally with an 11-4 fourth quarter to hand American Division leader Great Valley (13-2, 10-1) its first league loss, 41-38. Brad Sherry netted 20 for the Patriots.

Philly.com/Kobe Bryant. Tim Lazorko took team MVP honors with 9 points and 9 assists as Holy Ghost Prep beat Harriton, 49-35, at Lower Merion.

Suburban One Challenge. Dan Ransom grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a 10-foot jumper at the buzzer as Souderton knocked off host Pennsbury, 49-47. Jerrell Burke aided the win with a game-high 20 points. He converted 11 of his 13 foul shots.

Also at Pennsbury, Bobby Brown and Paul Haggerty each scored six points in the first quarter as Hatboro-Horsham beat Council Rock South, 46-35, at Pennsbury.

Senior guard John DeCamara scored all 11 of his points in the first half as Upper Dublin rolled over visiting Quakertown, 54-26.

Central Bucks West converted seven three-pointers, three from Derek Dyer, as the Bucks downed Truman, 60-52, at Bensalem.

Cheltenham followed Toyon Walker's 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks to a 63-47 win over visiting Central Bucks East.

Abington's Anthony Durham saved 13 of his 20 points for a 24-6 third-quarter outburst that fueled a 69-55 comeback win at North Penn.

Nonleague. Ryan Rigby knocked down each of his four technical foul shots with under 2 minutes left as Bristol downed visiting Robbinsville, 37-31. Rigby's foul shots broke a 30-30 tie after a Robbinsville player was charged with a double technical for arguing with an official.

Charles Dorsey (22) put back an offensive rebound at the buzzer to lift Academy Park at Penncrest, 47-45.

Luis Cirilo knocked down a pair of threes in the fourth quarter as Mariana Bracetti slipped past visiting Mastery Charter South, 57-55. Cirilo scored seven points in the period to finish with a game-high 22.

Rysheed Jordan scored a game-high 31 points and added eight assists as Vaux downed visiting Haverford School, 64-56.

Dan Rutecki added nine rebounds to his 14 points as Springfield (Delco) cruised past visiting Pottsgrove, 60-41.

Chris Williams of Strath Haven posted the nation's top time this season of 7.87 seconds in winning the 60-meter hurdles at the Kevin Dare Invitational at Penn State.

Neshaminy's Cody Minnig won the long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 53/4 inches.

New Balance Games. Penn Wood's Darrell Hill had the best individual shot put with a throw of 57-53/4 in the invitational at New York City's Armory. Cardinal O'Hara's Chazz Wilks (51-103/4) was third.

North Penn's Nick Swan won the individual high jump at 6-4, and Upper Darby won the shuttle hurdles in 31.34. Third-places were posted by North Penn's Trevell Moxey in the triple jump (44-6), Coatesville's Laye Samoura in the 55 hurdles (7.84), and North Penn's Dan Gevirtz and Moxey in the long-jump relay.
