Fri. Pa. boys' roundup: Penn Charter upends Malvern

John Moderski scored 13 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter and knocked down eight free throws as host Penn Charter topped Malvern, 56-44. Penn Charter (8-8 overall, 2-2 Inter-Ac) limited the Friars to just nine points in the fourth. Moderski added 15 rebounds.

Malvern Prep (17-1, 4-1) is ranked No. 3 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer.

Around the Inter-Ac, junior forward Mike Hayes scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first half and Chestnut Hill held off visiting Germantown Academy, 53-48. Hayes knocked down his first five shots from the field and finished the half shooting six for seven.

Bicentennial. Visiting Lower Moreland made sure to cash in on its trips to the foul line, as the Lions (9-5 overall, 7-1 Bicentennial) knocked down 20 of their 29 free throws in the fourth quarter en rout to downing Holy Ghost, 50-43. Mike Mangan poured in a game-high 17 points. Holy Ghost drops to 15-1, 6-1.

Also in the Bicentennial, junior point guard Max Drake recorded his 1,000th career point on a floater at the end of the first half as Plumstead Christian topped visiting Morrisville, 62-48. He finished with 22 points and is the third player in school history to reach 1,000.

Eric Williams tied the game in regulation and won it in overtime as MaST Charter turned away visiting Springfield (Montco), 54-53. Williams sank a field goal with 12 seconds left in the fourth and then hit his clinching shot with 1.9 seconds left in OT.

Ron Burrell dropped in six of his game-high 12 points as Delco Christian knocked off host Jenkintown, 38-31. Henry Miller chipped in with 11 points.

Catholic. Senior guard Kyle Adkins drove through traffic and hit a game-winning layup as time expired to lift host Archbishop Wood over Father Judge, 67-65.

Adkins finished with six points and five assists. Joe LoStracco poured in 12 of his 23 team-high points after halftime and added 15 rebounds.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 5-1 in league play. Steve Griffin led Judge with a game-high 24 points.

Also in the Catholic League, Secean Johnson grabbed eight rebounds and Shep Garner knocked down five three-pointers as Roman Catholic downed visiting West Catholic, 71-30.

Stephen Vasturia's 10 rebounds and four assists helped St. Joseph's Prep knock off visiting Conwell-Egan, 75-49.

La Salle knocked down nine threes in the first half as it easily passed visiting Lansdale Catholic, 66-38. Stephen Smith had three treys in the half and finished with 12 points.

Christian Rivera grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists as Archbishop Ryan rolled at Cardinal O'Hara, 49-25.

Central. Ryan Furst scored eight points in the fourth quarter and Marple Newtown rallied at Springfield (Delco), 42-38. The Tigers scored the game's last six points to grab the win.

Friends Schools. Chima Nwakpuda grabbed eight rebounds, dropped in 15 points and led visiting Shipley past George School, 71-35.

Pioneer. Elijah Jackson knocked down a free throw with 4 seconds left and sealed Pottstown's 50-48 win over visiting Spring-Ford.

Suburban One. Tim Abruzzo poured in 39 points to reach 1,000 for his career. The senior knocked down nine threes and entered the game 35 points shy of 1,000.

Norristown built up a large lead before holding off host Upper Merion, 46-42. The Eagles led 31-17 at the half. Upper Merion's James Mobley hit six three-pointers to finish with 18 points.

Mike Brown scored eight points in each half as Hatboro-Horsham eased rolled at Quakertown, 59-34.

Nonleague. Ryesheed Bonaparte and Charles Davis combined for 11 points in overtime as host Ben Franklin topped Paul Robeson, 65-63. Robeson's Marquise Richards tied the game in regulation on a three-pointer with 12 seconds left.

William Leak had 10 points in the first half en route to a game-high 18 points and visiting New Media Charter topped Martin Luther King, 60-50.

Wrestling

Bernard Lipscomb recorded a first-period pin at 120 pounds and Frankford clinched second place in the Public League with a 49-21 win over visiting Washington.Vincent Li scored a 9-5 decision at 145 pounds as Central cruised past visiting Olney, 65-9.

Rasheed Weldon's first-period pin at 195 pounds helped Martin Luther King hold off host Mariana Bracetti, 45-36.

220-pounder Chris Rusi and 106-pounder Joe Bruno scored second period pins as Northeast rolled at Lincoln, 51-21.

Nonleague. Academy of the New Church won six matches by forfeit as it knocked off host Germantown Friends, 39-23. Blake Johnson scored an 8-3 decision at 160 pounds for ANC's lone non-forfeit win.

St. Joseph's Prep John Brenner needed just 5 seconds to pin Academy of the New Church's Glenn Pitcairn at 126 pounds as the Hawks cruised to a 48-30 win at Germantown Friends.

Swimming

Adam Sjoholm set a pool-record in the 500 meter freestyle as Germantown Academy rolled at Episcopal Academy, 110-70. His time of 4:42.66 topped the 4:54.06 mark set earlier this season by Paul Stocken. The Patriots set four pool records.

Football

West Chester Henderson senior Max Perisse, a two-way tackle, has committed to play at Coastal Carolina. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Perisse, a second-team all-area selection, is expected to play defense for the Chanticleers. He was a two-year starter for the Warriors.
