Sat. Pa. boys' and girls' roundup: Conestoga strikes at buzzer

John Grib drove for a layup as the buzzer sounded to give Conestoga a 40-38 Central League boys' basketball victory over visiting Haverford High on Saturday night.

7 Cities Roundball Classic. Dinjyl Walker scored 25 points and dished out eight assists to lead Academy of the New Church to a 47-45 win over Woodside (Va.) in the showcase at Portsmouth, Va.

Erikk Wright's three-point play in overtime kick-started a 10-3 period for Chester on the way to downing Landstown (Va.), 66-59.

Wright finished with 10 rebounds and a game-high 21 points.

Wheeling Cancer Research Classic. Sophomore guard Ja'Quan Newtown poured in 16 points but Neumann-Goretti fell to DeMatha (Md.), 62-47, in the West Virginia. showcase. DeMatha, ranked No. 5 in the nation by ESPN, was led by junior center Beejay Anya's 17 points, nine blocks, and seven rebounds.

 

Girls' Basketball

Down by two, Fran Sweeney's three with 4 seconds left lifted host Germantown Academy over Inter-Ac foe Episcopal Academy, 50-49. Kiernan McCloskey chipped in with 13 rebounds and Jaryn Garner had 20 points and four assists as the Patriots won their fourth straight.

Nonleague. Junior guard Katie Maloney knocked down four threes en route to a career-high 27 points as host Sun Valley turned away Chester, 72-67. Alie Alkins aided the effort with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Benhind Lauren Munro's 11 rebounds, four steals and four assists, Interboro knocked off visiting West Chester East, 48-41. The senior forward finished with a game-high 20 points.

Central. Ali Grundy had four of her team-high 15 points in OT to help Conestoga down host Haverford High, 53-50.

 

Track and Field

Great Valley's Ned Willig captured first place in the invitational mile at the Hispanic Games at the Armory in New York City. Willig's time of 4:15.61 is the nation's third-best this winter and qualifies him for the Armory's Millrose Games in February.

Wellington Zaza of Strath Haven finished second in the 55-meter hurdles (7.41) and first in the pole vault (46-7.50) and his teammate Chris Williams finished third in the pole vault (14-0). Norristown finished third in the boys' 4x200 relay (1:31.76) and Caela Williams of Penn Wood finished second in the Invitational 400-meter dash (58.20).
