Fri. Pa. girls roundup: Unbeaten Cheltenham tops Notre Dame

Cheltenham completed a three-game sweep of its visit to the 10-team Spring-Ford basketball tournament on Friday, spoiling a record performance by Notre Dame's Kathleen Fitzpatrick by beating the Irish, 71-63.

Christina Coleman kept the Panthers (8-0) unbeaten by scoring 25 points and hauling down 16 rebounds, while Ciara Andrews added 24 points.

Fitzpatrick matched the Notre Dame (5-4) school record for three-pointers in a game by hitting seven in a 24-point effort. Susan Welch and Kyle Cain set the mark in 1997.

Also at Spring-Ford, Downingtown West's Brittany Sicinski got loose for 31 points, including 12 in the opening period, and fueled a 58-39 win over Conestoga.

Great Valley got 15 points from Kim Hooven, but was held without a field goal until the second quarter in a 58-38 loss to Daniel Boone.

Hempfield defeated Agnes Irwin, 46-43, despite Faith DeVlieger's 11 points for the Owls.

George W. Snear Tournament. Mount St. Joseph whipped Pope John Paul II, 66-28, in the championship game at the Fellowship House in Conshohocken, paced by MVP Alex Louin's 10 points, four steals and four assists.

Norristown rallied to win the consolation game, 56-53, over Plymouth Whitemarsh. Tyshay Britten had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, and Stephanie DiNolfi came up with 17 points and five assists.

Cactus Jam. Upper Darby won its eight-team bracket in the event in Phoenix with a 52-26 victory over Panoka (Canada). Kate Fitzpatrick's scored 16 points and was rewarded with the MVP trophy, while Tyra Polite (10) earned all-tournament honors.

Pickerington Tournament. Cardinal O'Hara placed fifth in the Ohio tournament with a 45-40 win over Proviso East (Ill.). The Lions' Alyssa Monaghan had six points and six assists to join Maureen Leahy on the all-tournament team, and Shanice Johnson posted 13 points and eight rebounds.

Diamond State Classic. Council Rock North took sixth place in the eight-team Cup 1 competition at St. Elizabeth's (Del.), dropping a 36-33 consolation verdict to Bishop McGuiness. Emily Grundman had 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots for the seventh-ranked Indians.

Boardwalk Cup. Methacton's Kelsey Watson snapped a 33-33 deadlock by making two foul shots with 4 seconds left, giving the Warriors a 35-33 win over Our Lady of Mercy in the Ocean Cup Bracket championship at Wildwood. Watson also grabbed 11 rebounds.

North Penn followed Lauren Crisler's 21 points, six rebounds and three assists to a 53-42 success against Holy Spirit in the Boardwalk Cup Bracket.

Pennsbury's Sajanna Bethea scored 14 points, but the Falcons missed two shots in the last 4 seconds and lost, 32-31, to Shawnee in the Jersey Shore Bracket.

KSA Classic. Merion Mercy salvaged a 39-30 consolation win over Island Trees (N.Y.). The Golden Bears' Sam Siegfried was named the bracket's MVP.

State College Tournament. Strath Haven got off to a slow start in the championship game and lost, 67-40, to host State College. The Panthers' Bridget Scott (11) and Jamie Morris were named to the all-tournament team.

Nonleague. Archbishop Carroll, ranked No. 2 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, knocked off visiting Shipley, 59-48, as Meghan Creighton scored nine of her 16 points in a 24-14 first quarter; she also had eight rebounds and four assists. Kristie Costantino contributed four rebounds and four assists.
