Marquize Speight’s shot from midcourt at the buzzer gave Overbrook a 65-64 win at West Philadelphia in the basketball championship of the West Side Winter Classic on Wednesday afternoon.
Before Speight stunned the Speedboys with his long-distance three, the hosts had taken a two-point lead with 2.3 seconds left on Cameron Estrada’s putback.
Speight finished with seven points, while teammate James Harrison had a game-high 18 points and was named the tournament’s MVP. Donte Watkins and Estrada both finished with 16 to lead West Philly.
Also at West Philly, Jared Bryant poured in 13 points in the fourth quarter to help Bartram pull away from Parkway West, 58-48, in the consolation.
Jameer Nelson Philly.com/Rally Classic. Howard Sellars hit a floater in the lane with 15 seconds left as Church Farm rallied to top Calvert Hall (Md.), 56-53, at Lower Merion. Sellars' bucket gave the Griffins a 54-53 lead after they trailed by seven entering the fourth. Sellars finished with 29 points.
Anthony McKie's 15 points failed to be enough for Plymouth Whitemarsh as the Colonials fell to Patterson (Md.), 54-35.
B.J. Johnson scored nine points in the fourth but Lower Merion's rally fell short as Emmaus won, 68-65.
Shooting Touch Shootout. Junior guard Britton Lee scored a team-high 21 points as Roman Catholic knocked off Amityville (N.Y.), 69-53, in the Boston tournament. TreVaughn Wilkerson grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked six shots to aid the Cahillites, ranked No. 6 by The Inquirer in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Alec Stavetski scored 13 of his team-high 17 points in the middle quarters as Archbishop Carroll fell to Hudson Catholic (N.J.), 62-40.
Boardwalk Classic. Kyle Slawter dished out seven assists and Archbishop Ryan navigated around Winslow Township, 52-39, in the Bill Osborn Bracket of the Wildwood tournament. Gage Galeone led the Raiders with 14 points off the bench.
Steve Griffin had 16 points but Father Judge fell to Lower Cape May, 44-43, in the Jay Craven Bracket.
Robert Hopf Tournament.Blaise Coggin and Joe Sobolewski both scored nine points in the second half to help host Jenkintown charge past Douglas, 49-42, in the consolation game. In the second quarter, the Drakes trailed by as much as 14 before cutting the deficit to seven at the half. In the second half, Jenkintown outscored Douglas, 31-17, to rally for the win.Marcus Tillery dropped in 11 second-half points en route to a team-high 15 as Swenson turned away Franklin Towne Charter, 60-39, in the final.
Altoona Tournament. Jordan Simmons tied it at the buzzer in regulation, then knocked down crucial free throws in overtime as Abington topped Allentown Central Catholic, 71-68, in the tourney's final.
Simmons' trey at the buzzer tied the score at 60 entering the extra period. With 7.9 seconds left he knocked down a pair from the line to seal the win and finish with 16 points.
Cobra Holiday Tournament. Sherrod Higginbotham nailed a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds to play as Central Bucks West topped St. Andrews (Fla.), 39-37, in the Lake Worth, Fla., tournament.
Wissahickon Trojan Classic. Gordon Bentley knocked down a trio of three-balls and Jordan Reed nailed 13 foul shots as Wissahickon downed Frankford, 86-69, in the tournament final.
Daiquan Ashley and Merdic Green combined for 14 of Truman's 16 points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 44-39 win over Lansdale Catholic, in the consolation game. The Tigers trailed 33-28 heading into the final quarter.
Lower Moreland Tournament. James Mobley tallied five three-pointers en route to a game-high 33 points as Upper Merion downed Morrisville, 80-48. It was the senior shooting guard's second 30-point game of the season and he finished with 24 points in the first quarter.Jake Cohen scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as Lower Moreland held on to top Calvary Christian, 58-50.
KSA Classic. Ryan O'Neil's 20 points helped Central Bucks East easily skate past West Broward (Fla.), 57-48, in the opening round of the Orlando tournament's Grey Bracket.
Stop DWI Classic. Billy Shank hit three threes, including a key one with 48 seconds left, as Neumann-Goretti put away Mount Vernon (N.Y.), 65-61, in the quarterfinal of the Binghamton tournament. Shank's late three gave the Saints a 4-point lead and the senior guard finished with a game-high 17 points. John Davis aided the effort with 17 rebounds.
Over The River Tournament. Matt and Leo Massimino led the charge as New Hope Solebury topped Riverside, 48-35, in the consolation of the South Hunterdon tournament. Matt scored 16 points and recorded five steals, while Leo totaled 13 points and made eight fourth quarter free throws.
Unionville Tournament. Brock Sheets had 10 rebounds, Vaughn Jenkins grabbed 11 and Kennett overpowered Esperanza, 55-45.
Al Achuff Tournament. Brahieme Jackson hauled in 17 rebounds and recorded five blocks as host Bishop McDevitt topped Pope John Paul II, 53-46, in the championship game. Markiese Chandler chipped in with 23 points and seven steals. Emmanuel Young scored a game-high 14 points to help Ben Franklin ease past Germantown Friends, 44-34, in the consolation game.
Benedictine Capital City Classic. Nick Linder hit all 13 of his foul shots, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as Germantown Academy knocked off St. Albans (Md.), 70-62, in Richmond.
West Chester East Tournament. Elijah Griffin grabbed eight rebounds and poured in 20 points as Downingtown East topped Daniel Boone, 53-30.
