Jarrell Haywood settled in, stepped to the line, and knocked down two free throws to seal Cheltenham's 51-48 basketball win over Vaux on Tuesday at Plymouth Whitemarsh as part of the Jameer Nelson Philly.com/Rally Classic.
Haywood's foul shots came with 20 seconds left in regulation, and the senior guard finished with 12 points. Nafis Walker scored a team-high 13.
The Panthers trailed by 4 points at halftime before they rallied to outscore Vaux, 15-8, in the third quarter. Cheltenham limited standout junior guard Rysheed Jordan to a season-low 13 points.
Also at the Philly.com/Rally Classic, Kevin Oberlies grabbed six offensive rebounds and Gene Williams scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter as St. Joseph's Prep raced to a 53-30 win over Upper Darby.
Yohanny Dalembert came off the bench to score 14 points and record two blocks as Lower Merion eased past Church Farm, 81-52. B.J. Reynolds shot 8 for 10 from the field for a game-high 26 points.
Pat Smith's 21 points weren't enough as Archbishop Wood fell to Sanford (Del.), 60-51.
In his first game since transferring from Roman Catholic, sophomore guard Rip Engle finished with eight points as Council Rock North eased past La Salle, 64-53. Senior guard Aaron Morgan finished with 27 points, including nine in the fourth, to lead the Indians.
Reading Tournament. Senior forward Anthony Nash tied his career high of 32 points as West Chester Rustin pulled away from Pottstown, 56-45. Nash knocked down four threes and hauled in 10 rebounds.
Al Achuff Tournament. Dave Cotellese hit six three-pointers in the first half as Pope John Paul II downed Ben Franklin, 65-50, in the first round at Bishop McDevitt. The senior forward finished with a game-high 24 points.
Senior forward Brahieme Jackson ripped down 12 rebounds to help host Bishop McDevitt easily down Germantown Friends, 77-36.
Robert Hopf Tournament. Marcus Tillery scored nine of his 13 points in the third quarter to help Swenson fend off Douglas, 72-47, at Jenkintown. Shahiyd Tilghman-Bullock poured in 13 of his 20 points in the first half for Douglas.
Brandon McGuire's 30 points, 14 of which came in the fourth quarter, provided the difference as Franklin Towne Charter downed Jenkintown, 59-49.
Primetime Eastern States Christmas Tournament. Quentin Davis pulled down 10 rebounds and dropped in nine points as Math, Civics & Sciences held off Trenton Central, 65-57, in the semifinals of the John Castaldo Flight at Trenton Catholic. Jeffon Powell and Quadir Welton aided the effort with eight rebounds each.
Hakeem Baxter poured in 16 points but Philadelphia Electrical was unable to top Linden, as the Chargers fell, 63-45, in the Fred Falchi Flight.
Gilman School Tournament. Tao Xu grabbed eight rebounds and swatted away four shots to lead Haverford School over Mount Carmel, 67-51. The 6-foot-11 center finished with eight points.
Wissahickon Trojan Classic. Senior guard Imire Taylor scored a career-high 30 points as Frankford rolled over Truman, 72-59. Taylor scored 11 points in the first quarter, hitting two threes.
Tanoh Kpassagnon dropped in 19 points and Jordan Reed added 18 as Wissahickon easily downed Lansdale Catholic, 58-22.
Ridley Tournament. Mike Louden led Cardinal O'Hara over Mainland, 59-45, by dropping a game-high 22 points.
Allentown Allen Tournament. Dan Rutecki's 16-point, 7-rebound effort was nearly matched by Matt Fox's 17 points and 6 boards as Springfield (Delco) knocked off Neshaminy, 54-43.
Boardwalk Classic. Paul Pfeffinger dropped in 14 points as Monsignor Bonner fell to St. Joseph (NJ), 52-48.
West Chester East Tournament. Andrew Walsh and Paul Kubat anchored the low post as Devon Prep overpowered Downingtown East, 57-52. Walsh grabbed 11 rebounds, and Kubat had nine.
Lenape Board 34 Showcase. Brendan Kilpatrick's 19 points led a balanced offensive attack as Malvern Prep downed Moorestown, 67-39. The Friars received scoring from 11 players.
Benedictine Capital City Classic. Nick Linder knocked down 11 of his 12 free throws and Julian Moore grabbed 12 boards, but Germantown Academy fell to Bishop Ireton (Va.), 60-55, in the Richmond tournament.
Whitehall Tournament. Alexander Woelkers provided a strong effort as Faith Christian slipped past North Hunterdon, 66-62. He finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Chris Smith Memorial Tournament. Brandon Brown dominated down low as Engineering & Science knocked off William Tennent, 44-36. Brown grabbed 11 rebounds and added 8 points.Tajhere McCall dropped in a game-high 16 points.
