Northeast AD Riley leaves coaching post

As has been rumored, Chris Riley will step down as Northeast High's football coach after three seasons.

"I'll probably announce it in the next week or so," he said Tuesday.

Riley said he would stay on as the school's athletic director, overseeing 29 programs. He is also a special-education teacher.

Riley compiled a 23-12 record with the Vikings. In 2010, he guided his alma mater to a 9-3 mark and the team's first Public League championship since 1983. He was a member of the '83 squad.

Riley confirmed that Jim Adams, Northeast's junior varsity coach, is likely to be his successor.

Walsh retires. Joe Walsh resigned as West Chester Henderson's coach after 20 seasons.

With the Warriors, Walsh posted a 131-104 record and won Ches-Mont League titles in 2003, '07, and '11. His 2007 squad went 12-2 overall, 6-0 in the National Division, and advanced to the PIAA District 1 Class AAAA final before losing to Ridley.

"I made a decision before the beginning of the season to retire," Walsh, 61, said. "I've had a good run. It's time to do some other things."

Walsh, an assistant at Henderson for 16 years before taking over, also was the head coach at Sun Valley for four seasons. With the Vanguards, he went 17-26 and won a Del-Val League crown.

Steve Mitten, Henderson's defensive coordinator, is considered the front-runner to replace Walsh. Seven of the Warriors' nine assistants played under Walsh.

Vikings to be honored. A parade and medal ceremony for Archbishop Wood's PIAA Class AAA championship team is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Warminster school.
