Tues. Pa. girls' roundup: Friends' Central advances to final

Pa. Independent Schools. After playing to a 1-1 tie through overtime, Springside used a 3-1 edge in penalty kicks to oust host George School in the first round. Goalie Alexis Giovanazzo made three saves in the shootout, and Breon West, Julia Schumacher and Kelsey Chapman had successful penalty kicks.

Kelly Kubach's second goal of the game was scored from Lauren Dimes' assist with three minutes to go in the second overtime, making Penn Charter a 2-1 winner over visiting Abington Friends.

Tennis

Germantown Friends won the Friends Schools League championship for the first time since 1999 with a 3-2 triumph over visiting Shipley.

Joanna Booth and Olivia Fiechter won straight-set singles matches, and the first-doubles duo of Haley Abbott and Lauren Shinn added a 6-2, 6-2 win to put the finishing touches on the Tigers' 15-1 season.

Field Hockey

Upper Perkiomen produced goals from five players and a 5-1 semifinal win over Gwynedd-Mercy in the PIAA District 1 Class AA playoffs at Council Rock North. Emily Rodenberger had a goal and an assist, and goalie Katey Lederer made nine saves.

Pa. Independent Schools. Hill School converted goals by Katie Ferrara and Alex Lange into a 2-0 first-round win over visiting Academy of the New Church.

Shipley dealt visiting Baldwin a 6-1 setback with Tori Messerschmidt's two goals and one assist, and goalie Alex Cones' three saves.

Kim Ryan scored twice and joined Katie Schell and Kelly Goodman in scoring their first varsity goals during Notre Dame's 12-0 win over visiting Solebury School.

Inter-Ac. Alana Dumas scored two goals, and Lexi Curry had a goal and an assist while guiding unbeaten Episcopal Academy (18-0-1) to a 3-1 win over visiting Penn Charter.

Volleyball

Baldwin's Taylor Flowers had 10 kills, Rosie Matthai posted 13 assists, and Kaylah Klezcka added 10 digs in a 21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-22 win over visiting Academy of the New Church in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Tournament.
