Tues. Pa. boys’ roundup: Conestoga rallies past C.R. South

Facing a 7-5 deficit in the seventh inning, Conestoga rallied behind big hits from Luke Mogle and Jake Carr to stun Council Rock South, 8-7, in the semifinals of the PIAA District 1 Class AAAA baseball playoffs on Tuesday.

Mogle started the comeback with a leadoff home run in the top of the seventh, and Carr delivered a double off the outfield fence at Great Valley to drive in the tying and winning runs with two outs.

South got two hits each from Zach Fitzgerald (two runs), Justin Thomas and Jeff Miller (two doubles, two RBIs).

Spring-Ford also advanced to Thursday's title game via a 9-3 success against Council Rock North at Upper Dublin.

Mike Oczypok struck out 10 batters and scattered six hits in a complete-game pitching effort, and Cody Clarke paced the Rams' 13-hit offense with a single, double, triple and four runs batted in.

West Chester East kept alive its hopes for a state playoff berth with a 9-8 consolation bracket thriller over visiting Marple Newtown.

After giving up four runs in the top of the seventh, East rallied for four in the bottom of the inning to advance to the fifth-place game.

The tying and winning runs scored on a deep fly ball by Bill Krebs. Tom Spitz scored from third base and when the ball was bobbled, Bob Atwell scored from second base on the same play.

East's Kyle Lawrence hit a two-run homer, and Marple's Brian Leone drove in three runs with two doubles.

Public League. Edison will try for its first Public League baseball crown on Wednesday after outslugging Washington, 15-8, in the league's playoff semifinal doubleheader at Richie Ashburn Field.

Shortstop Nate Coronado went 3 for 4 with a solo homer in the third inning and a two-run homer in the fourth, and his brother, Nelson, added a single, double, three runs scored, two RBIs and two perfect innings of relief with six strikeouts.

Frankford advanced to the final for the eighth time in nine years by dumping Central, 9-3, in the other semifinal.

Districts 1, 12 Class AA. Springfield (Montgomery County) moved into the sub-region final against Esperanza by subduing Conwell-Egan, 5-1, at Glen Mills.

Max Vido reached base three times, including a bases-empty home run, and Adam McGinty went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles in support of pitcher Bobby Andrus.

District 12 champion Washington suffered a 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 loss to Whitehall in the first round of the PIAA state Class AAA tournament at Southern. The Eagles finished a 16-3 season with Danil Pavlov's 12 kills and Claudy Mathieu's 11 kills.

Class AA. Holy Redeemer overcame a six-point deficit late in the third game and wrapped up a 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 first-round victory over Masterman at Lake Lehman.
