Sat. Pa. boys’ roundup: Neumann-Goretti shuts out Ryan

It was the second win in three days for the Catholic League Blue Division-champion Saints (14-0), who beat No. 9 Archbishop Wood, 11-7, on Thursday.

This time, they did it with the pitching of sophomore Joe Kinee, who went all seven innings and gave up just three hits. North Carolina recruit Mike Zolk also chipped in with an RBI double.

Archbishop Ryan, the third-place team in the Catholic Red Division, slipped to 7-6.

In other nonleague games:

Tucker Colton went 3 for 3 with a two-run double to lead Penn Charter to a 13-7 win at Pottsgrove.

The Quakers (10-7) scored six second-inning runs to break the game open.

Greg DiSanto had a pair of doubles to highlight an eight-hit attack as Archbishop Carroll won at neighborhood rival Radnor, 9-1. Steve Stortini pitched a three-hitter for the Patriots (9-5).

Bicentennial. Drew Mininger and Mike Melendez each had three hits for Christopher Dock in its 10-7 win at Lower Moreland. Lewis Palmer hit a grand slam for the Lions.

Wilson West-Lawn needed a four-run fifth to edge visiting Boyertown, 9-8. Both Dan O'Connell and Matt Purnell had two hits apiece for the Bears.

Track and Field

Host Neshaminy dominated the Rob Thomas Invitational, but Council Rock North distance star Chris Campbell provided the individual highlight with a record-setting performance in the 3,200-meter race.

Campbell covered the distance in a meet-record time of 9 minutes, 30.48 seconds to easily outdistance second-place finisher Alex Kane of Central Bucks East (9:45.27).

Neshaminy had winners in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races in addition to the long jump.

Bryan Reice was the winner in the 100 and 200.

Tennis

Brandon Loreti and Sean McGarry of New Hope-Solebury upset the No. 1-seeded team of Holy Ghost Prep's Christian Bernlohr and Evan Tarzian, 7-6, (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 to win the Bicentennial League doubles championship at Lower Moreland.

Both teams advance to the District 1 Class AA Doubles Championships on Friday.

Central. Andrew Zhong and Gavin Studner needed three sets to beat the Harriton team of Sam Borowski and Max Blumenthal, 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 in the league doubles title match at the Healthplex.

Rugby

Jackson Pierucci had two conversions and two penalty kicks to lead host Malvern Prep past Cardinal O'Hara, 30-26, in a state championship quarterfinal.

The third-seeded Friars advance to a semifinal match against second-seeded St. Joseph's Prep on Saturday at Unionville.

The Hawks advanced with a 36-22 win over No. 7 Father Judge.

Cardinal O'Hara was seeded 11th.

Lacrosse

Host Great Valley scored 10 goals in the second half to rally for a 13-8 nonleague win over Spring-Ford. Tim Lamb scored all three of his goals in the second half for the Patriots (12-4), who got four goals from Greg Merrill and three more from Eric Gartner.

Ridley needed a pair of goals from Eric Streicher to win at Abington, 5-4.

Ryan O'Kane's goal with 10:21 left in the game made it 5-3.
