Sat. Pa. boys’ roundup: A first for Holy Ghost Prep

Connor Pietrak put his name on Holy Ghost Prep's first-ever District 1 Class AA tennis singles championship trophy with a straight-set win in the title match on Saturday.

The No. 1-seeded Pietrak earned the trophy and the distinction with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Phoenixville's Karlyn Small in the title match at the Healthplex in Springfield (Delaware County).

In Class AAA, also at the Healthplex, Conestoga's Kevin Wang added a District 1 title to his Central League crown by beating Unionville's Michael Furr, 6-3, 7-5.

Baseball

Archbishop Ryan made the most of its four hits in a 5-3 nonleague win at Neshaminy.

The Raiders (5-5) scored four runs in the fourth inning, including a single by Zach Zajac that produced the game's winning run. Rick Romano pitched five innings to earn the win.

La Salle got three solid innings of relief from Jim Schlupp in a 4-2 win at Haverford School. Schlupp blanked the Fords in the final three innings.

Christopher Dock pounded out 16 hits, led by Dan Carr's two doubles, in a 12-5 win at Palisades. Carr also pitched three innings of relief for the Pioneers (7-2).

Catholic. Sophomore Joey Glennon went 3 for 4 with a double, three RBIs, and three runs scored as Neumann-Goretti outslugged Father Judge, 13-11.

Central. Conestoga scored all of its runs in the first four innings and held on for a 9-8 win at Springfield (Delaware County). Both Ryan Richter and Scott Williams were 2 for 3 for the Pioneers. The Cougars had 12 hits and were paced by Nick Horan's 3 for 4.

Bicentennial. Terrance Walsh had three RBIs, including a double, as Devon Prep coasted to a 12-2 win at Jenkintown. Alex Pachella picked up the win in relief for the Tide.

Friends Schools. Gardner Nutter and Steve Baratta each went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead a 10-hit attack for Westtown in its 10-3 win at Abington Friends.

Ryan Henry's three-run homer in the second inning was the key blast of the game for Shipley in its 11-5 win at Germantown Friends.

Track and Field

Malvern Prep's Tom Pitt posted a 6-foot, 7-inch high jump and Jean Luc-Twyman had a 23-1 long jump to highlight the Unionville Invitational.

Paris White of Cape Henlopen (Del.) was second in both events and won the triple jump (45-81/2).

Another impressive performance came from Upper Darby's Amara Kamara, who won the discus with a toss aof 144-0.

tossed the discus 144-0, more than 10 feet better than second-place finisher Dima Curtis of Unionville (134-9).

Lacrosse

Great Valley got five goals and an assist from Greg Merrill in a 17-2 win over Tatnall (Del.) at Radnor's Katie Samson Festival. Eric Gartner added three goals and an assist.

In another Festival game:

Shipley scored nine second-half goals in a 13-4 win over Harriton. Mike Litner scored four goals to lead the Gators (10-2), who also got three goals from Mattock Callahan.

Nonleague. Ridley (12-1), the No. 6-ranked overall team in the state, used three goals from Kelton Heverly to beat host Cardinal O'Hara, 7-4.

The Lions, who trailed, 3-2, at the half, were led by Joe Simpson's hat trick.
