Will one great coach be succeeded by another?

Shortly after Dan Bielli retired yesterday as Archbishop Carroll High's football boss, strong rumors began to circulate that his replacement will be Gil Brooks.

Brooks led St. Joseph's Prep to 162 wins and five Catholic League championships (one overall, four Red Division) in 18 seasons through 2009. He was fired in March 2010 over complaints about his sideline demeanor. He spent last season as the defensive coordinator at Camden Catholic in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Fran Murphy, Carroll's athletic director and offensive coordinator, said the school opened the position yesterday and, per Archdiocesan rules, must accept applications until roughly mid-April.

Murphy declined to comment on the Brooks rumors. He did say the school hopes to have a new coach in place by April 30. *
