La Salle places second at state swimming

La Salle's David Speese won the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.95 seconds, helping the Explorers to a second-place finish in the boys' team scoring at the PIAA Class AAA state championships Saturday night at Bucknell University.

West Chester Henderson's Andrew Kosic won his second event of the meet by setting a state record of 43.23 in the 100 freestyle.

In the girls' competition, Hershey set a national record of 3:22.85 in the 400 freestyle relay and took the team title with 269.5 points. Council Rock North (101) was sixth and North Penn (92) eighth.

West Chester East's Christina Leander won the 100 backstroke in 54.83, edging William Tennent's Melanie Busch by 0.01.
