Henderson swimmer the top seed in two district events

Andrew Kosic isn't aiming to break his 100-yard butterfly record at the District 1 Class AAA swimming championships Friday and Saturday at La Salle University, but don't be surprised if the West Chester Henderson senior makes a run at it.

"I'm not fully resting [for the district meet]," said Kosic, the top seed in both the Class AAA 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle events at the district meet. He's aiming, instead, for a big splash at the PIAA meet March 16-19 at Bucknell University.

Already committed to swim for Georgia Tech next season, Kosic set the District 1 butterfly record of 48.87 seconds two years ago. He will swim in the district 100 freestyle for the first time in his high school career.

"I thought I'd give the 100 free a shot after posting some good times in it at Junior Nationals last year," Kosic said. The state 100 freestyle record is 44.64. Kosic's district qualifying time was 45.75.

The Warriors senior will be among hundreds of district swimmers vying for berths in the state championships.

Council Rock North is the defending girls' district Class AAA team champ, having won its first district crown since the school district was split into two high schools.

Villa Maria Academy is a heavy favorite to win its ninth straight Class AA girls' title, particularly since two of its strongest AA competitors in the past, Radnor and Mount St. Joseph, have moved up to Class AAA.

Boyertown will be out to defend its Class AAA boys' title, the first one in the school's history. Springfield (Montco) is the two-time Class AA boys' champion.

Like Kosic, Downingtown East's Danielle Siverling is the top seed in two Class AAA individual events. Last season, she lopped a second off her 2009 record in the 200 freestyle when she was timed in 1 minute, 50.2 seconds on the opening day. Siverling came back later in the meet to win the 100 freestyle. She also set a meet record for the 100 freestyle when she went 50.99 in the first leg of the Cougars' winning 400 freestyle relay.

Her two-day effort earned Siverling the girls' swimmer-of-the-meet honors in Class AAA.
