C.R. South seniors complete district sweeps on mat

Two wrestlers, four years, and a combined eight district titles.

Council Rock South seniors Matt Rappo and Matt Martoccio are that good.

Both Rappo and Martoccio notched their fourth consecutive individual titles at the District 1 Class AAA North tournament Saturday at Council Rock North, leading South to the team title with 110 points.

The Golden Hawks have won five consecutive district titles.

"We think it's a big deal," South coach Brad Silimperi said. "I don't know about other sports, but even one is a big deal."

Billy Rappo, a South junior, won the 103-pound title.

Norristown, which featured three district champs, was runner-up with 96.5 points, and Neshaminy placed third with 72.

Martoccio, who wrestles at 140 pounds, became the first District 1 North wrestler to win both the sectional tournament and district tournament in all four years of varsity. He overwhelmed Plymouth Whitemarsh's Lucas Wisniewski with a 12-2 major decision.

"If I do what I need to do, and stick to my moves and my pace," Martoccio said, "in my mind, I shouldn't be beat."

Matt Rappo worked a bit harder for his win in the 135-pound class. He survived a rugged encounter with Norristown freshman Mikey Springer, 7-5, after Springer came on late with a reversal that threatened to end Rappo's streak.

"It's really been a great journey," Martoccio said, before commenting on Matt Rappo, with whom he has practiced for years. "To have someone to go with you every day, with the same goals and same mentality . . . he's doing great things for me and I sure hope I'm returning the favor."

Plymouth Whitemarsh's star 171-pounder, John Staudenmayer, also claimed his fourth straight district title, earning a 4-1 decision over South's Shane Gilmore. Staudenmayer, who will wrestle in college at North Carolina, was visibly frustrated after the match despite the win.

"It's frustrating. . . . He played good defense, I guess," Staudenmayer said of Gilmore, who he thought was retreating throughout the match. "Overall, it's a good accomplishment. I'm happy with what I've done."

Staudenmayer, ranked No. 1 in the state by the PA Power Rankings, is the odds-on favorite to win a state title in two weeks in Hershey.

His younger brother, Justin, a sophomore, won the 125 title, pushing his record to 33-3 this season. Justin Staudenmayer earned a major decision, 11-2, over Council Rock North's Shane Longstreth, to whom he had lost at the prestigious Beast of the East tournament earlier this season.

Norristown's Brandon Parker repeated as district champ at 160 pounds. Hatboro-Horsham's Matt Harkins won his second district title with a 43-second pin of Pennsbury's Josh DiSanto at 119. Souderton's Joe Stolfi was a repeat champ at 215 pounds.

Upper Moreland's John Bolich was the champ at 189 pounds and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Bolich, 34-0 this season, won two of his three matches by pin and the other with a 17-0 tech fall.

Souderton's Kolton Veit, a freshman, was the champion at 112 pounds. Perhaps one day he will accomplish what Martoccio and Matt Rappo have.

And is Veit happy about it?

"Beyond," he said.
