The Mercy Vocational girls' basketball program has been active since 1972, but Friday's 33-28 win over visiting Solebury School marked the first championship in school history.

The Monarchs (25-3) took the Penn-Jersey League title with the win. They also have a shot at the Tri-County championship and have a semifinal game in that tournament scheduled for Tuesday.

Since the game was played at the Gustine Lake Recreation Center, the Monarchs could not cut down the nets.

Junior point guard Linette Young scored 13 points to lead the Monarchs, who won all nine of their regular-season games in the Penn-Jersey League. They went 11-2 during the Tri-County League regular season and finished second only to Barrack Hebrew.

Last year's Penn-Jersey champion was Life Center (N.J.).

Indications are that it won't be a 39-year wait for another title because the Monarchs return all five starters (three juniors, two sophomores).

Mercy Vocational led from start to finish with Young making three of four free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold off a late Solebury School run. The Spartans got 13 points apiece from Alexis Rice and Clover Stieve.

Public Class AA. At High School of the Future, Prep Charter took the title with a 75-31 win over Freire Charter behind Kahleah Copper's 24 points and 14 rebounds. Tiffany Johnson added 12 points for the Huskies (20-1).

Public Class AAA. Also at High School of the Future, Engineering and Science took home the title with a 61-55 win over Strawberry Mansion behind Brittany Hrynko's 17 points.

District 1 Class AAAA. In a first-round game, host Cheltenham cruised to a 62-25 win over Souderton behind Ciara Andrews' 20 points. Andrews scored 16 points over the middle two quarters. The fourth-seeded Panthers (20-3) also got 14 points apiece from Christina Coleman and Austin Hamler. The 29th-seeded Indians were led by Carley Kendall's nine points.

Cheltenham will host William Tennent in the second round on Wednesday night.

Jess Schlesman scored 18 points to lead Pioneer Athletic Conference champion Boyertown to a 47-33 win over Central Bucks South.

The sixth-seeded Bears (23-2), who needed three overtimes to subdue league rival Spring-Ford in the title game on Wednesday night, also received 13 points and 10 rebounds from Kaitlyn Eisenhard.

Radnor, the No. 19 seed, surprised No. 14 Sun Valley, 55-37, behind Taylor Quinn and Hannah Rose Nussbaum, who each scored 10 points. Sophomore Gia DeAngelo scored 29 points for Sun Valley.

Downingtown West got 19 points from Elizabeth Coyne in a 52-38 win over visiting Haverford High.

Council Rock North got 17 points and seven rebounds from Emily Grundman in a 41-13 win over visiting Central Bucks West.

Pa. Independent Schools. In a semifinal playoff game, top-seeded Germantown Academy coasted to a 58-45 win over Hill School behind Jaryn Garner's 20 points and five steals. Monica Schacker added 13 points for the Inter-Ac League champions and Kiernan McCloskey chipped in with 11 rebounds. Deanna Mayza's 14 points led the Blues.

Germantown Academy will play Shipley for the title on Saturday at Penn State-Abington (4 p.m.)

Catholic. In a quarterfinal playoff game, top-seeded Archbishop Carroll got 10 points and 11 rebounds from Emily Fazzini in a 36-19 win over Neumann-Goretti. The big quarter for the Patriots (17-6) was the third, when they blanked the Saints, 7-0. Fazzini scored six of the seven points during that quarter. Omowumi Rafiu, a 6-foot-2 center, led the Saints with 10 points.

In another quarterfinals:

Jess Rotella's 25 points and 11 rebounds powered Archbishop Prendergast to a 52-37 win at St. Hubert.

Cardinal O'Hara got 12 points and 12 rebounds from Shanice Johnson in a 44-35 win over visiting Archbishop Ryan.

Swimming

At La Salle University, Archbishop Ryan's Sarah Hammer won the 50 freestyle 100 butterfly to highlight the first day of the two-day District 12 Class AAA championships.

In Class AA, Archbishop Wood swept both relays.
