Prep’s Morris earns 600th victory

There was no sweating it out as St. Joseph's Prep basketball coach Bill "Speedy" Morris reached a significant milestone Monday.

The Hawks opened the second half with a 25-5 scoring run and ran away from host West Catholic in a Catholic League game, 70-31, to give Morris his 600th high school victory.

Morris, in his eight season at the Prep and in his 26th high school season, improved his record to 600-159. Including his time as the men's' and women's' basketball coach at La Salle University, his overall record is 882-378.

Gene Williams led the way for the Hawks (12-5 overall, 6-2 league).

In other league games:

Reggie Charles collected half of his 20 points in the opening quarter and helped Father Judge beat visiting Conwell-Egan, 64-56.

Lamin Fulton picked up 12 of his 20 points in the second quarter and led Neumann-Goretti to an 83-52 win over visiting Cardinal O'Hara.

Public. Brandon Fulton collected 11 of his 17 points in the first quarter and sparked Overbrook to a 55-49 win over host Martin Luther King.

Strawberry Mansion got 12 points from Jermaine Gregory and beat visiting Hope Charter, 57-41.

In a game that was postponed due to a leaking roof at Pepper Middle School, Communications Tech got 15 points each from David Johnson and Tony Parker and tripped visiting Del-Val Charter, 66-48.

Engineering & Science shut out visiting Swenson in the final quarter and trimmed the Lions, 59-15. Brandon Brown and Dijon Eggleton each scored 10 points for the Engineers.

Bicentennial. Seth Heinicke poured in 25 points to lead Calvary Christian to an 82-77 win over host Bristol.

Tri-County. Ron Gabbay's layup with 45 seconds left gave Barrack Hebrew a 57-56 win over visiting Woodlynde. Gabbay scored nine points in the final quarter and finished with 21 points.

Devon Haines earned a triple-double and lifted Phelps to an 88-20 win over visiting Kimberton Waldorf.

Haines scored 13 points, handed out 11 assists and grabbed 12 steals for the Lions who also got 25 points from Ryan Alfred off the bench.

Nonleague. Joe Patriarca dropped in 18 points and helped Northeast beat visiting Masterman, 56-50.

Eric Jarvis and Sean McCall each struck for 21 points and led Mastbaum past visiting Architecture & Design Charter, 74-67.

Marquis Amey notched seven of his 17 points in the first quarter and lifted High School of the Future past host Jenkintown, 46-33.

Mike Hutson collected 17 points and boosted Phil-Mont Christian past visiting Christian Academy, 56-38.

Wrestling

Father Judge heavyweight Jeremy Rieth closed out the Catholic League regular season with a pin in 2 minutes, 58 seconds and helped the Crusaders beat host St. Joseph's Prep, 54-21.

Judge will meet Monsignor Bonner and La Salle will take on the Prep in a semifinal playoff doubleheader Wednesday at La Salle at 5 p.m.

Ches-Mont. Warren Gizza-Sisson picked up a pin in 1:59 at 140 pounds and helped Kennett beat host Great Valley, 44-24.
