Tues. Pa. boys’ roundup: World Communications defeats Parkway West

After Terrell James sent Parkway West into a second overtime period with host World Communications Tuesday, the Stallions needed somebody to step up. That somebody was Shon Phillips.

Phillips knocked down a three-pointer and a free throw during the final overtime, and World Communications outlasted West, 62-61, in a Public League Division E basketball game.

James banked in a three-pointer for West with less than 20 seconds left in the first overtime, forcing a second overtime session. Phillips nailed his second three-pointer in overtime, and his free throw with 3 seconds left won the game. A desperation heave by West missed its mark.

Phillips scored 15 points and Markeith Mont added 16 points for the Stallions (11-6 overall, 8-2 league). West (6-6, 5-5) was led by Mike Stewart who scored 26 points.

Jay Hardy drained both ends of a one-and-one with 17 seconds left and gave Swenson a 56-54 win over host Mastery Charter South. Hardy scored 25 points.

Carnell Gray collected 16 points and led Del-Val Charter to a 67-64 win over host Hope Charter.

Derrick Mitchell notched 16 points and led Franklin Learning Center to a 59-56 win over visiting Ben Franklin.

A layup by Amir Butler with 35 seconds left gave Strawberry Mansion a 56-52 win over visiting Sayre. Butler scored 16 points.

Ray Jaggon contributed 19 points for Olney in a 65-61 win over host Kensington.

Harris Griffin picked up 19 points and Elverson pulled down 54 rebounds in a 68-62 win over host GAMP.

Jahid Brown scored all of his 14 points in the second half and helped Carroll get past visiting Bodine, 65-58.

Gratz roared from behind in the third quarter and toppled host Overbrook, 58-50. Aquil Younger led the charge by scoring 16 of his 25 points in the second half.

Troy Yancey collected 11 of his 21 points in the second half and led Lamberton past host Douglas, 47-39.

Travon King came through with 17 points and led Martin Luther King to a 54-45 win over host Northeast.

Marquis Amey, playing for the first time since the second game of the season when he broke a finger, scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as High School of the Future beat visiting Saul, 50-41.

Maurice Watson broke his own single-game scoring record of 41 points by two points and led Boys' Latin past visiting Furness, 73-64. Watson had scored 41 points twice.

Nijay Kelly dropped in 10 of his 23 points in the final quarter as Fels tripped host Central, 45-34.

Anthony Wright-Downing struck for 20 points and boosted Sankofa Freedom to a 58-46 win over visiting New Media Charter.

Jack Burris struck for 16 points and helped FitzSimons beat visiting Freire Charter, 63-50.

Terrell Daye collected 13 of his 27 points down the stretch and helped West Philadelphia beat visiting Roxborough, 70-57.

Ronald Rollins and Rickey Savage each scored 17 points to lift Lincoln past host Washington, 71-58.

Jermaine Flowers scored 17 of his 28 points in the first half and propelled Southern to a 63-49 win over host Edison.

Mike Sturdivant poured in a school record 41 points and boosted Masterman to a 73-56 victory over visiting Randolph.

Sturdivant, who scored 14 points in the second quarter, broke the previous record of 39 points set in 1996 by Corey Dickerson and equaled in 2002 by Labeeb Muhammad.

Imire Taylor and Keith Washington contributed 19 points each as Frankford dropped visiting Bartram, 72-53.

Shaquille Graham notched a career-high 19 points and led Germantown past visiting Bok, 61-41.

Shaquille Bowman collected 19 points as Esperanza handed host Audenried its first league loss, 56-34.

Demetrius Davenport picked up 23 points and led Palumbo to a 60-38 win over visiting Science Leadership.

Devante Chance scored seven points in the first and fourth quarters and finished with 17 points as Philadelphia Electrical upended host Dobbins, 71-48.

Prep Charter got 13 points from Laquan Stephens and beat visiting Mastery Charter North, 56-31.

Elijah Crandall scored 11 points in each of the middle quarters and finished with 33 points as Philadelphia Academy Charter tripped visiting CAPA, 73-46.

Rafeeq Bush accounted for 20 points and boosted University City to a 72-45 win over visiting Mastbaum.

Marquise Richards converted four-three pointers in the first four minutes of the game and led Paul Robeson to an 86-58 win over visiting Parkway Northwest.

Richards had five three's in the first quarter, seven for the game and scored 26 points.

Dijon Eggleton and Tahjere McCall each scored 13 points for Engineering & Science in a 61-28 win over host Franklin Towne Charter.

Syhmer Armstrong collected three dunks and scored 25 points as Palmer dismantled visiting Rush, 77-31.

Vaux spread the scoring around and earned a 71-21 win over visiting Mariana Bracetti. Rysheed Jordan and Jaleel Williams each scored 12 points for the Cougars.

Inter-Ac. Brian Metzler collected 21 points and sparked Episcopal Academy to a 62-57 win over visiting Germantown Academy.

Malvern Prep jumped out to a 17-0 lead and routed visiting Haverford School, 62-32. Brendan Kilpatrick paced the Friars with 20 points.

Central. Jared Seltzer scored 15 points and was one of five Conestoga players to reach double figures as the Pioneers outlasted host Marple Newtown in triple overtime, 66-64.

Suburban One National. John Raymon converted a layup at the buzzer and gave Council Rock North a 55-54 win over host Abington. Aaron Goodman scored 18 points for the Indians.

Tyler Wuensche (16 points) sank a pair of free throws with four seconds left in a second overtime period and secured William Tennent's 65-64 win over visiting Council Rock South.

Leo Vincent scored 14 points for Bensalem in a 43-42 win over host Truman.

Ryan Arcidiacono converted 13 of 16 free throws and scored 21 points to lead Neshaminy past host Pennsbury, 62-46.

Suburban One Continental. In a battle for first place, Pennridge moved a half-game ahead of North Penn after beating the visiting Knights, 53-51. Jared Schaffer scored 15 points for the Rams.

Kevin Sweet struck for 13 points and helped Central Bucks West beat host Quakertown, 57-32.

Del-Val. Lamon Church scored the 1,000th point of his career and helped Chester beat visiting Academy Park, 92-41.

Church reached the milestone on a finger roll in the third quarter and became the 25th Clipper ever to score 1,000 points.

Ches-Mont. Avon Grove got 12 points each from Nick Hamilton and Kevin Pankonien and held off visiting West Chester East, 55-53.

Glen Mills sprinted to a 27-7 lead and cruised to a 74-45 win over visiting Chichester. Stefron Poole scored 16 points for the Battling Bulls.

Bicentennial. Chad Nowak dropped in 12 points for Holy Ghost Prep in a 51-29 win over visiting New Hope-Solebury.

Friends Schools. Kenny Johnson scored 13 points in each of the middle quarters and accounted for 36 points as Abington Friends eased past host Moorestown Friends (N.J.), 68-45.

Ky Howard poured in 18 points and led Shipley to a 52-19 win over visiting George School.

Tri-County. Dihmer Gardner struck for 18 points and led Collegium Charter to a 51-44 win over visiting West-Mont Christian.

Phelps had 12 players score in the first half and dropped host Wyncote Academy, 74-16. Damien Williams scored 12 points for the Lions.

Calvary Christian got 19 points from Seth Heinicke and beat visiting MaST Charter, 57-53.

Arthur Borgerhoff chipped in with 25 points as Del-Val Friends beat host Kohelet Yeshiva, 46-34.

Penn Charter got 20 points from John Moderski and beat visiting Valley Forge, 65-48.

Hiram Ramos notched 17 points to lead Pennsylvania School for the Deaf to a 57-21 win over visiting Renaissance Academy Charter.

Wrestling

Terrell Stepney got Lincoln off on the right foot with a 57-second pin in the second bout of the day at 215 pounds and the Railsplitters went on to beat visiting Franklin Towne Charter, 48-34, in a Public League match.

Nonleague. Chris Helmuth got a pin in 3 minutes, 32 seconds at 171 pounds and helped George School beat host Perkiomen School, 40-18.

Solebury School also beat the Indians, 36-24, as Renan Pedersen pinned in 55 seconds at 189 pounds.

Swimming

Jamal Willis broke an Episcopal Academy pool record and led Penn Charter past the Churchmen, 101-87, in an Inter-Ac League meet.

Willis won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.76 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 21.94 seconds. He also won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.25 seconds.

Episcopal got two pool records from Brendan McManus. He won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.50 to break the old mark of 2:00.71, and took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.0, bettering the previous record of 1:02.81.
