Fri. Pa. boys' roundup: Carroll takes battle of Catholic unbeatens

Archbishop Carroll, the top-ranked team in The Inquirer's Top 10, faced off with Father Judge Friday night. Both teams came into the game undefeated in the Catholic League with a combined record of 17-3, but the Patriots are now tied for first with one fewer team after beating the host Crusaders, 61-53.

Judge (9-2 overall, 2-1 league) took an 18-4 lead in the first quarter, but Carroll (9-2, 3-0) stormed back to tie the game by halftime, 27-27, and took a 47-36 lead into the final quarter.

Juan'ya Green scored 18 points for the Patriots while Steve Griffin scored 20 points for the Crusaders.

Craig Slade struck for 18 points as Monsignor Bonner got past visiting Cardinal O'Hara, 54-44.

In another league game, Brahieme Jackson struck for 18 points and lifted Bishop McDevitt to a 58-46 win over host Lansdale Catholic.

Burger King Classic. Aaron Brown converted a basket with 26 seconds left and handed Penn Wood a 57-55 win over St. Edward's (Oh.) in a first-round game in Erie. Brown scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Inter-Ac. Brian Metzler scored the go-ahead basket in overtime and Episcopal Academy slipped past visiting Penn Charter, 58-54. Taylor Wright iced the win with a free throw with one second left and scored 16 points.

Greg Guers accounted for 14 points as Germantown Academy downed visiting Haverford School, 50-39.

Brendan Kilpatrick chipped in with 11 points and led Malvern Prep to a 41-26 win over visiting Chestnut Hill Academy.

Central. Radnor sank four free throws in the final two minutes and edged host Penncrest, 27-25. Eric Eichenger led the Red Raiders with 10 points.

Kurt Johnson scored half of his 16 points down the stretch and led Marple Newtown to a 52-47 win over host Strath Haven.

Zack DeVito (21 points) hit a shot for Springfield (Delaware County) to send the game into overtime and the Cougars went on to beat host Harriton, 63-56.

Suburban One National. D.J. McFadden went five for six from the free throw line in overtime and secured Abington's 74-70 win over host William Tennent.

In a battle of teams with 5-0 conference records, Aaron Goodman picked up 20 points and lifted Council Rock North to a 42-37 win over visiting Bensalem.

Goodman grabbed 11 rebounds and converted four free throws in the final minute of the game.

Suburban One Continental. Central Bucks West roared from a 34-33 deficit down the stretch and beat visiting Pennridge, 47-39, handing the Rams their first league loss.

Derek Dyer paced the Bucks with 11 points.

North Penn moved into a first-place tie with Pennridge with a 46-36 win over host Souderton. Matt Possanza scored 18 points for the Knights.

Matt Kane converted 12 of 14 free throws and scored 23 points to lead Hatboro-Horsham past visiting Central Bucks South, 60-47.

Central Bucks East held host Quakertown to single digits in each of the final three quarters and cruised past the Panthers, 51-30.

D.J. Beausejour led the Patriots with 12 points.

Suburban One American. John Decamara (17 points) was perfect on five free throws and scored seven points in the final quarter as Upper Dublin dropped host Wissahickon, 58-49.

Pioneer Athletic. Josh Redmond scored 13 of his 18 points in the final quarter and lifted Bishop Shanahan to a 66-62 win over host Pope John Paul II.

Andrew Kenney picked up 14 of his 19 points in the second half and helped Perkiomen Valley beat visiting Pottsgrove, 42-38.

Bicentennial. Seth Heinicke contributed 19 points as Calvary Christian held off host Delco Christian, 64-61.

Mike Hutson collected 10 of his 24 points in the opening quarter and Phil-Mont Christian held on to beat visiting Morrisville, 52-46.

Rasheed Young poured in 16 points and led MaST Charter to a 57-44 win over visiting Springfield (Montgomery County).

Jose Figueroa came through with 19 points and 14 rebounds and handed Plumstead Christian a 58-36 win over host Bristol.

Steve Kohlbrenner scored 13 points and was one of 11 players to score for Devon Prep in a 62-27 win over visiting New Hope-Solebury.

Friends Schools. Yilret Yiljep contributed 17 points and boosted Westtown to a 36-27 win over host Shipley.

Academy of the New Church raced to a 22-4 lead and eased past visiting Moorestown Friends (N.J.), 62-22. Dinjiyl Walker scored 16 points for the Lions.

Nonleague. Deion Boyer drained a three-pointer with five seconds left in the game and handed Franklin Learning Center a 52-51 win over visiting FitzSimons.

Boyer scored five points and teammate Turhan Griffin picked up 16 points.

Sean McLean hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left and gave Bok a 66-64 win over visiting Audenried. McLean scored 20 points.

Malik Wesley struck for 22 points as Freire Charter edged visiting Delaware Valley, 63-60.

Andrew Stewart iced the win when he notched a basket with 10 seconds left.

Lemeir Mitchell came through with 16 points and helped West Philadelphia beat visiting Carroll, 66-43.

Nafee Hardy collected 14 of his 18 points in the first half and led Hope Charter past visiting Maritime Academy Charter, 59-32.

David Johnson led a balanced Communications Tech scoring attack with 13 points and helped the Phoenix beat host Ben Franklin, 69-35.

Wrestling

A pair of pins in the final two bouts of the day gave Episcopal Academy a 36-34 win over visiting Haverford School in an Inter-Ac League match.

Alden Park got the Churchmen (7-0, 2-0) close when he pinned in 1 minute, 25 seconds at 103 pounds. Luke Brooman secured the win when he decked his opponent in 1:00 at 112 pounds.

Public. Neil Mustafa picked up a pin in 35 seconds at 130 pounds and helped Northeast bet host Frankford, 58-12.

Carlos Martinez needed just 31 seconds to earn a pin at 125 pounds and helped Lincoln destroy host Kensington, 78-6.
