Sunday was a day of celebration for Archbishop Wood basketball player Joe Getz.

The 6-foot senior guard broke his own school record for points in a single game with a 41-point performance, and became the fifth boy in Wood history to reach 1,000 career points. In addition, Wood defeated visiting West Catholic, 60-53, in a Catholic League matchup.

Getz, who also had five steals, scored a record 40 points in Wood's season opener against West Chester Henderson. That mark lasted until he sank a foul shot with 1 minute, 3 seconds left against the Burrs - a shot that also put him at 1,000 career points.

Also for Wood, which built a 35-21 halftime lead, Shane Neher grabbed nine rebounds. West Catholic's Jaleel Reed scored 24 points.

In other Catholic League action, Roman Catholic's Montana Mayfield (13 points) made 5 of 7 fourth-quarter foul shots as the Cahillites defeated visiting Monsignor Bonner, 52-45. Fortunat Kangudi made 7 of 10 shots from the field for 15 points and grabbed nine boards.

Eddie Mitchell netted 23 points, grabbed five steals and scored seven points in a 22-10 second-quarter run that ignited La Salle's 60-40 win over visiting Archbishop Ryan.

Nonleague. Jake Marcus, who had no first-half points, scored 17 in a 29-10 fourth quarter that rallied Kohelet Yeshiva from a 35-22 deficit with 6:30 left to a 49-39 win over visiting rival Barrack Hebrew on Saturday night.
