Neshaminy takes it to Rustin in semifinal

Corey Majors' two first-half touchdowns perfectly exemplified Neshaminy's game plan in its 33-7 win over West Chester Rustin in the PIAA Class AAAA District 1 semifinals Friday night.

Corey Majors' two first-half touchdowns perfectly exemplified Neshaminy's game plan in its 33-7 win over West Chester Rustin in the PIAA Class AAAA District 1 semifinals Friday night.

Both runs were up the middle from inside the 5, both came on fourth down, and both capped long, gritty, smash-mouth drives.

There weren't many big plays for Neshaminy in a decisive win - not many were attempted, or needed.

Instead, the Redskins controlled the ball inside the tackles and marched yard-by-yard into a District 1 championship matchup against North Penn next week.

"We played well. The boys did a very nice job," Neshaminy coach Mark Schmidt said. "Our guys came to play today. Our defense played great. And on offense, we took the air out of the ball a little bit because they have some quick-strike ability."

Majors put the Redskins (12-1) ahead by a touchdown with 1 minute, 20 seconds left in the first quarter.

The drive started at the Neshaminy 44-yard line, lasted 12 plays, and ate up just over seven minutes of clock.

Anthony Woodroffe carried the ball eight times for 55 yards on the first drive.

Throughout the game, Woodroffe went periods without touching the ball before seeing handoffs in bunches. But when he got the ball, he made it count. The senior finished the first half with 101 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Woodroffe recorded one of his team's few substantial gains in the game when he broke through the line up the middle of the field and ran for a 55-yard touchdown with 9:58 left in the fourth quarter, putting his team up, 33-0.

Woodroffe's TD came after a third quarter in which Neshaminy controlled the ball for 8:38 of the 12 minutes.

Redskins quarterback Charlie Marterella hit Dwight Williams for a 16-yard touchdown pass on the second half's opening drive. The touchdown was scored with 6:20 left in the third quarter and capped a 10-play drive.

After Rustin went three-and-out on its only third-quarter drive, Neshaminy held the ball for the rest of the period. Majors scored his third touchdown of the night on the first play of the fourth quarter. That put his team up, 27-0.

The Golden Knights (11-2) did not score until 3:30 into the fourth quarter when Andrew Fithian hit Anthony Nash over the middle of the field for a 59-yard score.

Note. On Majors' second touchdown, Rustin's Malcolm Roberson lay injured on the field, attended to by medical personnel for roughly 25 minutes before being put on a stretcher and in an ambulance. Rustin coaches said Roberson had full movement but felt a slight tingling through his body. The injury was tentatively called a "minor bruise in his spine" and Roberson was expected to be fine.
