SOL football focus: Truman surviving in tough season

Coming off another tough loss, Truman football coach Ed Cubbage insists his team remains in good spirits.

Coming off another tough loss, Truman football coach Ed Cubbage insists his team remains in good spirits.

Truman (2-9 overall) fell to Stroudsburg on Saturday, 31-21, in their first game after going 1-6 in the Suburban One League's National Conference.

"The morale of the team has been great. Everyone is still on board," Cubbage said.

The Tigers' season has been tumultuous. Last year's coach, John Ianucci, left the team days before their first game. They have consistently fielded a roster of fewer than 25 players, and were forced to forfeit a game against Council Rock South at halftime because of injuries.

Cubbage has tried all season to pick up the pieces.

After the forfeit, he met with the school administration, and they agreed to continue with the season. The results have been promising. Truman has banded together and hung tough against Neshaminy, Pennsbury, and Bensalem in recent weeks.

"In the last three league games, we were right in the game going into the fourth quarter, but ran out of bullets," Cubbage said. "We are scoring, but we just can't stop anyone right now. We have some talent at the skill positions."

Leading the offense have been senior quarterback Derron Thompson and junior tailback Larry Winton. Both players recently eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark this season, making this the first Truman team in school history with two 1,000-yard rushers.

Cubbage said the lack of depth was most evident on the offensive and defensive lines, and has contributed to an inability to make stops on defense. The Tigers have essentially been rotating 14 players on both sides of the ball.

The team has kept loose by joking about the situation, Cubbage said.

"The players joke that we have as many coaches as players. It keeps the team in good spirits. If I didn't laugh about it, I would cry over it," Cubbage said.

Cubbage credits his senior leadership for helping the team stay strong. The Tigers will close their season on Thanksgiving against Conwell-Egan. If nothing else, they have created something to build on for next season.
