Pa. Girls: Archbishop Carroll shuts out Hallahan in girls soccer

Archbishop Carroll got a spectacular performance from goalie Alex Landmesser in her first varsity start in a 1-0 Catholic League girls' soccer play-in game win over visiting Hallahan on Monday.

Landmesser, up from the junior varsity, had 20 saves in the game. The Patriots needed only a goal from Margaret Filippelli to advance to a first-round game at Archbishop Wood on Thursday.

Field Hockey

Caitlin Walsh's overtime goal gave host No. 12-seeded Downingtown West a 4-3 District 1 Class AAA first-round playoff win over Radnor.

The Red Raiders, seeded No. 21, twice came back to tie it and benefitted from two assists from Colleen Caniglia and 18 saves from goalie Madi Shutt.

In other first-round games:

Goals by Kelly Noone and Jessica McCartny gave host Haverford High a 2-0 win over Perkiomen Valley. The Fords also got five saves from goalie Lindsay Baker.

No. 10 Conestoga got seven saves from goalie Rachel Tannenbaum in a 2-0 win over No. 23 Avon Grove. Britta Hjelm and Emily Pillon scored.

Emily Hitchings and Kelly Cross scored to give host and No. 11 Upper Dublin a 2-0 win over No. 22 Neshaminy.

Sara Watro's overtime goal gave host Methacton, the ninth seed, a 1-0 win over No. 24 Pennsbury.

Hannah Plappert two goals proved to be the difference in host and No. 6 Council Rock North's 3-1 win over rival and No. 27 Council Rock South.

Corie McLaughlin and Meredith Adams scored for host and No. 14 Downingtown East in its 2-0 win over Strath Haven, the No. 19 seed.

Amy Coughlin's three goals powered host No. 5 North Penn past No. 28 Chichester, 11-0. Ines Farre, Elizabeth Fedele and Juliamae Marger each scored twice for the Maidens, who led, 6-0, at the half.

Volleyball

Ebone Innis had 12 kills and three blocks to lead host Masterman past CAPA, 25-10, 25-11 and 25-20 in a Public League Class AA Semifinal match.

Palumbo advanced with a 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16 win semifinal over visiting Saul behind Emma Schad's 23 service points and 20 assists.

Tennis

Connie Wang's three-set win over Stephanie Pino at second singles propelled Baldwin to a 4-3 Inter-Ac League win at Episcopal Academy in a battle of league unbeatens.

Wang needed a pro-set 10-6 win in the third to pull the match out.

Golf

On the first day of the two-day PIAA State Championship Tournament at the Heritage Hills Golf Club, Chichester's Aurora Kan shot an even-par 72 to lead all individuals and Central Bucks East held a nine-stroke lead over Fox Chapel in the team scoring.
